This batch of hall photos shot on the outdoor lawn at the Chengdu World Line Anime Exhibition features Rem in her other-world maid styling. The light blue short hair is paired with plush animal ears and cross hair accessories, and the makeup uses bright blue contact lenses and red lips suitable for outdoor conventions.
The white off-the-shoulder ruffled top is paired with deep blue satin ribbons and bows, while the lower half consists of matching short bottoms and white over-the-knee socks. The cross-strap garter belts and ruffle details add layers to the overall outfit coordination for this piece of casual cosplay.
During the shoot, a white circular plush rug was chosen as a seating prop, placed at the intersection of the grass and the reed bush background. Although the afternoon natural light was strong, it was perfect for creating a bright outdoor feel. In terms of pose design, aside from the regular sitting postures, I intentionally made a cat-claw gesture with my fingers hooking the cuff and my palm facing forward. This stance breaks up the single static feeling and highlights the soft texture of the ruffles on the outfit for this pure and alluring photoshoot.
Low-angle shots, high-angle downward views, close-up details, and full-body scenery compositions are all involved. For convention hall photos, it's not easy to find such a relatively clean grassy scene amidst the complex crowds. Though the light isn't the absolutely controllable soft light of indoor photography, the built-in highlights and shadows under natural light are perfect for expressing the texture of the white fabric.
The focus of this set of photos lies in the balance of 'purity and allure.' The pure white attire and plush rug create a clean, lazy atmosphere, while the side-facing posture hugging my knees brings out a touch of chilly demeanor. When taking the side-profile close-up, I focused on catching the lines of the white socks and my arms.
Anime photography isn't only exquisite in studios; if the natural environment around the convention perimeter is utilized well, it can instead yield works with more authentic textures. This set of Rem cosplay photos from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- counts as a small experiment during a summer outdoor convention. Though they are hall photos, I still wanted to approach the quality of a formal photoshoot in terms of makeup/styling accuracy and light/shadow coordination. The light blue wig looks very translucent in the sun, and the foreign-body sensation of the contact lenses didn't affect the eye communication too much during the shoot. I met many fellow fans on-site, but when focusing on shooting, I could completely sink into the character's state instead.
The process of doing cosplay, from preparing the wig to adjusting the position of the garter belts, affects the final photo results down to every detail. This shoot on the grass lacked complex lighting equipment, relying entirely on natural light and the grasp of the timing. The shadow of the sun penetrating the reeds fell onto the white rug, and the formed chiaroscuro line beautifully balanced the frame's texture. Whether it's the extension of the off-the-shoulder styling or the curled-up posture hugging my knees, I hope to bring a sliver of personal interpretation while retaining the character's original setup.
Shooting convention hall photos requires quickly finding a perspective, and today's set of pictures counts as doing the absolute best composition presentation within a limited environment.
