Today I'm directly sharing this mirror selfie set of the 2B patent leather styling from NieR:Automata. The material of this outfit is glossy patent leather, which reflects light very obviously under the lights. The top is a short-sleeved style with a cutout on the chest and silver-white crisscross patterns along the edges. There is a belt at the waist for waist-cinching, and a hip-hugging mini skirt at the bottom. Due to the special material, it needs to be adjusted slowly when wearing to avoid leaving creases. Wearing elbow-length black long gloves, black stockings with a back seam for the legs, and matching black pointed-toe stiletto high heels. The hair is a white shoulder-length short cut, with a small black ornament featuring a white 'X' logo on top of the head.
The shooting location is an indoor space arranged with a great atmosphere. There is a dark red curtain in the background, and two Halloween pumpkin lanterns are placed on the wooden cabinet to the right. On the left are a bar counter, greenery, and photographic light stands. The lighting hits, half warm yellow and half cool, looking great on the patent leather. To take the ideal mirror selfie, I tried a few poses. The first one is a side profile with a lifted leg, which can showcase the leg lines and the side tailoring of the skirt. The second one is standing facing front, one hand spread outward, and the body slightly turned, so that the cutout design on the chest and the curves of the waist can both be captured. Blocking the face with the phone adds a bit of mystery, which is also a commonly used technique for mirror selfies.
Actually, wearing and putting on this outfit takes quite a bit of time. The gloves need to be pulled up to the upper arms, the stockings need to be smoothed out, and standing in high heels for a long time makes the feet a bit tired, but it's all worth it for the picture effect. When shooting, you must pay attention to avoiding too many fingerprints and reflections on the mirror, using a softbox or finding the right angle to avoid direct lighting. The blurring of the background must also be controlled so it doesn't overshadow the subject. Maintenance of this patent leather outfit is also very important; after shooting, it needs to be wiped with a soft cloth and not exposed to the sun, otherwise it easily becomes sticky or loses its luster. Although patent leather material photographs well, its texture varies with temperature changes, so before shooting, I purposely hung it in a shady place for a while before putting it on.
Over the years of doing cosplay, I increasingly feel that details determine the final effect. From material selection, hair grooming to scene arrangement, every step requires care. This styling has no complex props, relying mainly on the clothing's own gloss and the overall dark atmosphere to sustain it. The advantage of a mirror selfie is that you can adjust your posture at any time without bothering others; the disadvantage is that the lens will have a certain distortion, requiring proper distance and angle. I usually place the phone slightly below my chest and angle it upward just a bit, so that the legs appear longer. At the same time, using the pumpkin lanterns and red curtains in the background as visual extensions gives the image more layers.
While shooting this set of pictures, I tried adjusting my center of gravity in front of the mirror. Maintaining body stability while standing on one leg actually requires core strength, and a slight carelessness will make the posture look stiff. I spent some time relaxing my shoulders, putting the weight on the back foot while lightly tapping the front foot on the ground so that the lines would flow more smoothly. In addition, the material contrast between the black long gloves and the patent leather short skirt is also very interesting—one leans towards matte, the other is high-gloss, and under warm lights, a clear texture comparison can be seen. Overall, the experience of this mirror selfie session went smoothly, and the light and shadow effects of the final photos met expectations.
