This time I did the Ruan Mei cosplay from Honkai: Star Rail at the convention. The restoration focus of the entire styling is placed on the material of the clothing and the color contrast of the makeup. The wig is black short hair with cyan-green highlights on the inside, and stray hair strands are left on both sides of the cheeks to modify the face shape. The white lace flower hair accessory on the left side of the top of the head features pearl tassels, which gently sway when walking. To match the character, I wore blue-green contact lenses, deepened the contours in the eye makeup, used red lipstick, and added a reddish blush blending on both sides of the cheeks.
The costume is a deep blue slim-fitting long qipao dress. The upper body adopts an off-the-shoulder design, with white ruffles on the chest and collar, and golden metal hollowed-out patterns spliced right in the middle. The neckline is a white high collar inlaid with a green gemstone in the middle, tied with a pink bow below. The skirt hem adopts a high-slit design, with the side slit reaching up to the thigh position, and the edges are embellished with white flower embroidery and lace. To increase visual layering, I wore white pearl leg rings on my thighs, paired with pearl anklets at the ankles, and the shoes are a pair of black pointed-toe high heels. The arm part consists of white lace short sleeves, connected in the back to white semi-transparent lace tulle ribbons. The ribbons are very long with flower patterns on them; in pictures 1 and 2, I tried to showcase the draping feel of the ribbons.
The lighting at the convention site is actually quite complex, and the background is relatively dark. Special thanks to photographer Qingfeng Photography Person V, who used the on-site top light and rim light to darken the surrounding environment, making the character stand out very prominently in the frame. The single-leg-lift action in picture 3 nicely showcases the high slit of the skirt and the leg lines; shooting such actions requires anti-slip tape and attention to the standing balance of the high heels. Picture 4 sitting on a chair is another relatively relaxed state, mainly showing the drape of the skirt hem and the contrast of white lace under dim light.
The post-processing was completed together with Qingfeng Photography Person V. During retouching, we tried our best to retain the real texture of the skin and the details on the clothes without excessive skin smoothing, focusing on adjusting the transition of light and shadow and the contrast of warm and cool tones in the picture. Although this convention shoot involved standing in high heels for a long time and striking various poses to showcase the clothing ribbons which consumed quite a bit of physical energy, I am still very happy to have captured photos that met expectations. The whole process went very smoothly, and the cooperation with the photographer was very tacit.
The fabric of this outfit has a certain thickness and drape, and deep blue easily blurs into a mass under dim light, so the requirements for the photographer's lighting setup are relatively high. People come and go at the convention site, and it takes patience to find a suitable camera position. To capture the effect of the ribbons flying in pictures 1 and 2, they were actually manually whipped many times before being captured. The overall makeup is prone to being washed out by the lighting, so the lipstick and eyeshadow were intentionally chosen with higher saturation. This experience was great, and I also met many friends who like the same work. Everyone exchanged insights on cosplaying together, and time felt like it passed very quickly.
