[Ellen Joe cosplay] Shark Girl in the Midnight City: Pairing JK Uniform with Massive Weaponry

This outdoor location shoot primarily focused on an urban night vibe. Matching this character's setting, I felt the cool city lighting and grayish-white stone steps especially set off her imposing aura. To avoid looking stiff, I intentionally prepared several small props, like that red lollipop, aiming to convey an effortless and languid mood. However, carrying this massive prop was indeed a physical workout—the handle is quite long and the center of gravity is forward, requiring substantial core strength when holding it up for poses, and it easily left red marks on my back.

For hair and makeup, I chose short black hair with clearly layered red ombre highlights, which is truly the soul of the entire look. The metallic pendant choker at the neck added a subtle sense of restraint and mystery. The white shirt was chosen in a slightly relaxed fit so it wouldn't feel overly constricting, which, paired with the deep blue pleated skirt and its white-trimmed hem, created fantastic visual contrast. The square buckle detail on the belt caught faint reflections under ambient light, neatly focusing the visual center of attention.

On the night of the shoot, the wind was actually quite strong, frequently blowing up the skirt hem or tossing the wig around, which posed quite a challenge for candid captures. But the wind also brought a dynamic vitality; combined with the classic combination of a Black tights outfit and loafers, standing slightly higher on the steps and looking down immediately brought out the character's unapproachable aura. The opacity of the tights looked very natural under the mixed illumination of streetlamps and strobes—neither overly sheer nor oily—making the recreation feel authentic to life.

I deliberately experimented with several different settings, from overpass railings to nocturnal concrete walls and expansive stairways. At times I sat languidly shouldering the weapon, while at other times I knelt on one knee adjusting my attire. In terms of expressions, I strove to remain calm and collected, as the character inherently possesses a cool, detached gap-charm. Although this massive scythe-like weapon was genuinely heavy in hand, the moment the strobe flashed with a click, all exhaustion vanished instantly.

This JK uniform is actually a common basic staple in the cosplay community, but once paired with exclusive props and a signature hairstyle, it instantly breaks out of the standard school uniform mold. This is precisely what makes cosplay so fascinating: through permutations of wardrobe, props, and demeanor, entirely distinct personas can be crafted. When posing, I tried my best to use the props to divide the spatial framing, giving the overall composition rich layers rather than standing there plainly.

Another challenge of Night photography is lighting—simultaneously illuminating the subject's face while preserving the deep richness of the background. The photographer used high-powered location strobes this time, allowing us to capture sufficiently clear and emotionally charged imagery within a limited environment. I adore this stark contrast between light and dark; it makes the white shirt look exceptionally crisp and clean, while the blue skirt and black tights blend seamlessly into the night.

Throughout shooting this entire set, I feel the most demanding aspect was emotional and facial control. Expressions couldn't be overly exaggerated, nor too stiff and wooden. It required embodying the relaxed nonchalance of standing in a dark midnight city, gripping a massive weapon while leisurely enjoying a lollipop. This subtle contrast is far harder to master than simply striking cool poses. At times during the shoot, I even let my mind wander slightly to feel the night breeze and the distant hum of traffic, immersing myself genuinely into the character's environment.

In terms of details, whether it was that slight red gradient at the hair tips or the metallic texture of the accessories, I strove for absolute consistency with the original lore of Zenless Zone Zero. Although carrying this prop on the shoulder or resting it on the ground took up considerable space, it truly gave soul to the entire ensemble. During post-processing after wrapping up, we also strove to preserve genuine skin textures without over-smoothing; after all, this character carries an authentic, sharp coolness, and overly polished retouching would have felt out of place.

I find this to be the most engaging part of cosplay—it is not merely wearing specific clothes, but experiencing a distinct slice of life. This Night photography experience was fantastic; though exhausting, seeing the final images made every effort feel worthwhile. I hope this photo set conveys the character as I envision her.

Speaking of weapon maintenance: even though we only use them for photos, props must be properly cared for. If the lacquer finish gets scratched, it leaves noticeable marks, so handling must be cautious during transport. For makeup, to withstand nighttime winds and the demands of specular highlights, I selected long-lasting cosmetics. The moment I sat on the steps, the cool chill of the stone surface transferred through the stockings, feeling oddly in sync with the character's icy demeanor. I personally favor outdoor locations—the authentic textures of outdoor environments, such as the roughness of concrete, metallic glints off railings, and the stepped rhythm of staircases, add real-world slice-of-life elements, making the character feel truly alive on that street corner.

The nighttime light was pure and free of distracting ambient clutter, making it easier to capture the cool, sharp texture the photographer and I envisioned. Toying with the red lollipop in hand—though a tiny prop—that pop of red served as the finishing touch under the cool blue and white illumination, breaking up the visual monotony. Regarding costume details, we didn't just throw on the uniform; the collar and cuffs were meticulously arranged, and the tights were worn neatly and smoothly to project a crisp, sleek styling in photos. While the base JK uniform leans lightweight, the substantial weight of the weapon balanced the visual weight perfectly.

All in all, fidelity for me lies not only in how precise the clothing is, but even more so in one's mindset at the moment of shooting. If your dedication and relaxed immersion shine through in the photos, the cosplay is already more than halfway to success.
