This classroom-themed Zenless Zone Zero Ellen Joe cosplay shoot was an aesthetic I had been wanting to explore for a long time. To embody that slightly impatient yet languid break-time vibe, I put extensive preparation into both wardrobe and props. The white collared shirt was deliberately chosen in a slightly oversized cut, with sleeves rolled to the elbows and several collar buttons undone to evoke an effortless, carefree feel. The lower half was styled with a black high-waisted pleated skirt accented by white stripes, cinched by a black leather belt, and paired with sheer Black stockings and chunky platform loafers to anchor the silhouette. Around my neck was a black choker, and the wig featured a short black cut with reddish-pink gradient highlights at the tips, pinned on both sides with metallic cross hair clips to faithfully replicate the character's signature details.
While shooting in the classroom, dynamic shifts in light and shadow added immense texture to the images. Afternoon sunlight filtered through white sheer curtains, casting long, dramatic shadows across the wooden desks and chalkboard. For the first set of seated poses, I sat at a student desk resting my right cheek on my hand, left hand laid over a notebook on the desktop, holding an unlit prop cigarette between my lips while directing a slightly fatigued, zoned-out gaze into the camera. To capture the authentic look of daydreaming mid-class, I repeatedly tweaked the angle of my elbow support and neck tilt, as the slightest lapse would ruin posture. Draped casually across the chair back was a dark jacket tagged with white graffiti, evoking the everyday campus touch of a student tossing their school uniform over a seat.
Transitioning to standing shots, the frame standing beside the podium with one hand on my hip was where I channeled the character's confidence and subtle defiance. This pose requires conscious shoulder and neck control—dropping the shoulders and flaring the elbow outward to keep the lines of the blazer and pleated skirt sharp and clean. For the shot walking down the hallway, the lens caught the exact split second of me striding forward with a black leather bag slung over one shoulder, wig tips lifting slightly with the momentum, while the hallway's wooden floorboards and window frames provided beautiful linear perspective. Throughout this cosplay shoot, I prioritized utilizing window backlighting, as rim light catching the edges of the Black stockings and skirt hem brought out rich three-dimensional contouring.
Looking across the entire set, what satisfied me most was the expression management. Ellen Joe usually carries a drowsy, half-awake coolness, yet she acts with sharp decisiveness when duty calls. In front of the camera, I refrained from exaggerated expressions, choosing instead to convey mood through slightly knitted brows, half-lidded eyes, and subtly downturned eye corners. Having something resting between my lips is both her iconic character quirk and an effective way to break facial muscle tension, allowing me to slip into character far more quickly.
Joining this fan creation fest and seeing everyone interpret Zenless Zone Zero characters in their own unique ways was deeply resonant. As a cosplayer, from sourcing fabrics and styling wigs to working with the photographer to find angles and sculpt lighting on set, every step requires immense patience. Though the classroom setup was simple, the wooden desks and retro blackboard provided a vintage warmth that nicely balanced the character's edgy, trendy rebellion. Bringing a mental concept to reality step by step, capturing that mix of restlessness and leisurely calm during the ten-minute class break, is deeply fulfilling. I look forward to experimenting with more settings and lighting styles in the future, preserving even more authentic character moments through the lens.
