This location shoot was chosen to take place in a forest full of natural atmosphere, perfectly matching the character's background setting. The iconic elements of Alice's character are extremely distinct, with her long straight red hair and layered costume being of utmost importance. Trimming and styling the wig require great care; especially the ahoge on top and the layered strands on both sides must maintain a natural fluffiness so that they don't look stiff in the breeze.
Regarding the costume, the combination of the gray-white fur collar and the black leather stand-up collar creates a very distinct contrast in textures. To maintain the best condition outdoors, I carefully combed the fur collar before shooting to ensure the light hitting the fluff presents the texture of hair strands. Paired with red contact lenses, the focus and exertion of the gaze become the key to expressing the character's soul. Alice's personality leans toward being straightforward and bellicose, so in front of the camera, I tried to make my gaze sharper, minimized unnecessary facial expressions, and slightly tucked in my chin to highlight the firmness of my gaze.
Shooting in a forest presents the biggest challenge with lighting. Natural light sources change too fast; although the mottled light and shadow formed by sunlight filtering through leaves look great, they also create uneven shadows on the face. To ensure facial dimensionality while avoiding messy patches of color, it's necessary to constantly adjust standing positions and angles. Finding front-light or side-light positions, and using a reflector to slightly fill in the dark areas of the face, is a must-learn course for outdoor portrait photography. Often, to avoid an ugly tree shadow, I had to move back and forth among the bushes, and the rustling sound of stepping on fallen leaves actually helped me immerse myself better in this world full of swords and magic.
Outdoor environments are a severe test for base makeup and setting. Humidity changes in the forest and constant movement easily cause sweating, so I chose matte and waterproof base makeup products to ensure the skin still looks clean and translucent under close-up shots. For the eye makeup, to match the red hair and red eyes, I deepened the contour at the outer corners of the eyes to make the gaze more penetrating.
The process of a location shoot is actually a process of constantly blending with the natural environment. When the wind blows the wig and fur collar, candid shots are the best timing, but one must also be ready to prevent the wig from getting snagged by branches. Sturdy ancient trees and dead branches and moss on the ground provided a very rich sense of layering for the photos. When trying some dynamic poses, such as standing sideways or with a slightly lowered center of gravity, the cut of the costume can well maintain the stiffness of the silhouette. Although this shoot did not have many fancy props, the pristine feel of the forest itself, combined with the strong visual impact of the red hair, was enough to tell the story belonging to this character. Every patch of light and shadow in the photos was the temperature that truly existed in that forest on that day.
