Today, I shot a Blue Archive cosplay photoshoot together with my close friends. This time I took on Arona cosplay, joined by friends portraying Plana cosplay, Takanashi Hoshino cosplay, and Grinning Professor cosplay. Just preparing the wigs and makeup for this shoot took quite a long time.
Arona's light blue wig required layered thinning and trimming, paired with a white headband and a blue-and-white sailor uniform. To give the collar and chest buttons more three-dimensional definition, I made several tailoring adjustments to the outfit's pattern. Plana's silver-white wig was also meticulously styled, especially the bangs, which had to be trimmed to curve just right to cover the eyebrows while leaving the eyes visible. Since several of us were shooting together, the set was incredibly lively. During makeup, we helped each other refine our eye makeup. The focus this time was on enlarging the eyes and blending out blush, which, paired with light-toned contacts, softened the gaze. Arona's blue contacts and Plana's gray contacts were worn individually, with eyeshadow colors chosen to complement our respective hair colors. While our uniforms look simple, they actually feature numerous details: the blue piping at the collar, the circular patterned ornament on the chest, and the choker around the neck all needed careful fastening before shooting to ensure nothing shifted before the camera.
The shoot took place indoors with simple shelving and fruit props to give the scene a cozy, slice-of-life feel. We tried out many affectionate cuddling poses—leaning against each other, making cat paws with our hands, and holding headphones as if listening to music. Because we are so close, our interactions felt effortless and natural, capturing many lively and charming candid moments without feeling forced. To capture the best lighting, we constantly adjusted our positions between the window and fill lights. Before each shutter click, we reminded one another to fine-tune our expressions and hand gestures, ensuring the composition and character portrayal were spot on. The hardest part of group shoots like this is coordinating everyone's positioning and lighting. Overly harsh lighting causes the wigs to glare, so we utilized softboxes. During breaks, we reviewed playback together, discussing compositions and poses for the next shot. This process was not only about bringing the characters to life, but also about sharing our passions together. While wearing heavy cosplay outfits is tiring and wigs feel stuffy after hours, seeing the results on the camera made every effort worthwhile.
To get closer to the characters' personalities, we gave thoughtful consideration to posing design. For example, imitating cat paws wasn't just resting hands by our cheeks; it required a playful yet slightly tsundere flair. The shot with headphones was meant to convey the character's everyday side, keeping facial expressions much more relaxed. At the same time, we meticulously inspected every corner of the outfits to ensure no stray threads or wardrobe slips. After wrapping up, we gathered to look over the photos and swap notes on prop crafting. From wig selection and makeup trials to scouting the right indoor studio, every step was decided through joint discussions. Throughout the shoot, we continuously adjusted camera angles. For instance, when highlighting facial details, we used wide-aperture lenses to blur the background and draw focus straight to expressions. For full-body or duo interactions, wider focal lengths captured the surrounding props and environment. We also utilized the soft shadows of natural light to enhance image depth. For wig thinning and shaping, we kept hairspray and clips handy on set to maintain the bangs' form at all times. Because we shot multiple character pairings in the same set, we took turns, helping each other adjust garments and props while on standby. Cosplay is truly not just about taking photos—it is a collaborative creative journey. Seeing everyone work in unison to bring our beloved characters to life brings an indescribable sense of fulfillment. Though these photos lean into casual, daily interaction, we still did our utmost with scene styling and color coordination to stay faithful to the bright, slightly fantastical atmosphere of the original work.
