This Halloween-themed magic costume certainly took a lot of thought from preparation to fitting. To fit the festival's atmosphere, the overall choice went to the classic red-and-black color-blocking match. The inner red strapless top and short shawl were specially chosen in a lustrous satin material, which can present a great texture and highlight reflection under night photography flashlights, making it much more eye-catching than ordinary matte fabrics. The orange bow and triangular badge right in the middle of the shawl served as a great visual focus point while breaking the monotony of pure red, enriching the design in the chest area.
The waist is one of the focal points of the entire outfit; the red corset not only required careful adjustment of the lacing in the back to tighten the waistline, but on the wide golden belt in the front, that huge eye-shaped decoration was also particularly striking. During the crafting of this prop, to make the internal orange reflective piece look deeper, its thickness and material were specially adjusted so that light hitting it produces a gemstone-like refraction effect. To add a bit of aggressiveness and dark vibe to the character, it was paired with black leather gloves featuring jagged edges, whose subtle leather reflection echoes the black fluffy pleated skirt up and down. The red lining and golden diamond pendants of the skirt hem sway nicely when walking, and the skirt's arc is supported perfectly without looking limp, maintaining its shape even when squatting.
In terms of makeup, aside from wearing vibrant red contact lenses to change eye color, the biggest highlight was outlining black texture lines resembling lower eyelashes beneath the eyes. This two-dimensional-leaning painting technique is rarely seen in daily life, but it greatly increases a mysterious, eerie, non-human feel. The thin black-rimmed glasses are the soul accessory; once worn, that slightly cunning yet playful expression naturally exudes. The blunt bangs and red wig hair strands on both sides of the temples were meticulously trimmed, with the crown styled using hairspray to ensure they retain layering and a three-dimensional feel even during large movements, avoiding looking stiff. Particularly, the length of the bangs sits right between the eyebrows and eyes, neither blocking the gaze nor flattering the face shape well.
Because these are convention photos, nighttime fill lighting became the biggest challenge. A relatively hard front light source was used on site with the purpose of darkening the background while making the facial contours and the reflections of metal and leather accessories sharper, highlighting material contrast. In terms of action design, to match the character's magic setting, quite a few actions involving leaning forward, loosely gripping with one hand, or forming hand seals with both hands near the cheeks were tried. Squatting or looking down at the camera's perspective can effectively increase the frame's oppressive feel, giving viewers the sensation of being watched by magic. Such postures not only allow the shoulder and neck lines to stretch more, but also make the overall aura fit the theme setting of Halloween night even more. Nighttime lighting and shadows coupled with this red-and-black color scheme maximize the mysterious yet slightly dangerous atmospheric feel.
