[Astolfo cosplay] Fate/Apocrypha Fully Armored Appearance at May Day Firefly ACG Expo

On Day 1 of the May Day Firefly ACG Expo, I chose to debut with Astolfo's fully armored look. Preparing this armored setup was quite an undertaking, especially the gold-embellished polearm prop. Due to its internal construction, it turned out heavier than anticipated; assembling and balancing its grip alone took substantial effort, and holding it gracefully required considerable wrist and arm strength. Regarding the costume, to faithfully recreate the character, it featured an intricate inner top and skirt; the red leather on the chest and the golden metal armor plates all required precise fitting, while the white fur trim along the collar needed constant fluffing to keep it from flattening during movement. The red-and-white cape proved cumbersome in the dense convention crowds—taking up space and risking tripping passersby—demanding extra caution while walking. However, whenever caught by a breeze or actively swung, the flared cape instantly unleashed the character's signature heroic flair and dynamism. The combination of black over-the-knee stockings and white high-heeled boots adorned with gold buckles formed a visual highlight, perfectly suited for specific cinematic framing. For the shoot, the photographer picked a well-lit industrial-style corridor outside the hall, where glass windows on the left and a warm orange wall on the right created a natural contrast between cool and warm lighting. To flatter body proportions, we utilized numerous low-angle shots to elongate the leg lines clad in black stockings, achieving a sleek and tall silhouette. The cover action shot was particularly challenging: it required me to forcefully whip the cape back while lifting one leg and keeping the sword pointed across the frame. Capturing motion is never easy; we continuously adjusted the light-facing angles of the garment and the reflective highlights of the boots during movement to seize the exact moment both skirt and cape flared naturally. Fortunately, the photographer's timing was spot on, yielding ideal lighting and flowing lines in the final images. Moving and posing through crowded halls in such ceremonial armor took a massive toll on physical stamina, putting significant strain on my knees and shoulders. Yet seeing the grand sword and billowing red cape bring out the character's unmistakable aura on camera made every ounce of effort worthwhile. This Firefly ACG Expo experience offered valuable insights into photographing cosplays featuring long weapons, billowing capes, and stockings, laying down practical takeaways for future shoots.
