Taking advantage of the nice weather today, I wore this Wuthering Waves Phrolova cosplay outfit to the outdoor area of the Firefly ACG Expo. I wanted to share some styling details and little behind-the-scenes stories from the shoot. To recreate the character's ethereal, aloof vibe, I specifically emphasized red-toned eyeshadow paired with red color contacts, and the white lace eyepatch over my left eye was hand-fitted. To secure it firmly, I used plenty of double eyelid tape and eyelash glue to ensure my makeup lasted throughout the entire day of expo activities. For the wig, I chose light mint-green long curls with a thick braid styled on the right side. The wig had generous volume, making the braid quite substantial. To prevent frizz, I sprayed a good amount of leave-in conditioning spray before heading out, though outdoor breezes still easily tangled the strands, requiring gentle smoothing during breaks. The bangs were also trimmed just enough to cover the edge of the eyepatch, making it look more natural.
For the costume, a white off-the-shoulder dress was paired with lace arm sleeves; the fabric is relatively lightweight, yet yielded wonderful texture under outdoor sunlight. The red spider lily decorations and red ribbons across the dress were key focal points; to keep the flowers upright, wire framing was added inside, though being careful not to prick oneself was essential. The skirt hem features rich layers of lace and lining, billowing with graceful fluidity while walking. On my feet, I wore white lace-trimmed socks and red high heels. Since convention grounds have tricky terrain, walking in White stockings and high heels required extra caution to avoid snagging or spraining an ankle. To highlight leg lines while posing, the photographer found several low-angle camera positions to capture both the texture of the White stockings and the details of the shoes.
The outdoor lighting was fantastic. After discussing with the photographer, we tried half-body close-ups holding the flower, as well as full-body compositions squatting beside the roadside. In the squatting shots, to showcase the tiered skirt hem and leg contours, I adjusted my posture multiple times, striving to stabilize my center of gravity while maintaining character expression. When holding the handcrafted spider lily prop, fingertip pressure had to be very deliberate to avoid breaking the petals, gripping gently along the stem. The photographer patiently directed movements, scouted angles, and guided me on how to convey the character's melancholy and aloofness through my gaze. Before looking into the camera each time, I had to regulate my breath and drop my shoulders so the lines of the collarbones and neck looked best. The red floral accessories on the chest and waist were modeled after the original character art and fastened with hot melt glue, minding any areas prone to friction during the shoot.
Overall, this Phrolova cosplay took a lot of dedication in hair and makeup, especially with the eye look and wig styling. It was wonderful meeting so many fellow fans at the convention, exchanging Convention photos together. This photography experience is not only about recreating the character, but also about capturing the synergy of wardrobe coordination, prop crafting, and the interplay of light and shadow through the lens. This set was shot by the metal railings near Poly World Trade Center at the Firefly ACG Expo, where the green foliage in the background perfectly accentuated the contrast between mint green and red. I hope these photos allow everyone to feel the unique charm of this character in our Convention photos.
