For this voyage, the outdoor stairs and corridor were chosen as the primary scenes. The classic black sailor suit combined with the layered white ruffled skirt hem makes for the most iconic visual combination of Houshou Marine. As someone who has been in the community for many years, challenging this popular captain for the first time filled me with both excitement and anxiety. Looking at the results, however, the overall accuracy and character temperament were well captured.
For the wig, I specifically selected a pink-and-purple gradient color scheme, tied into low twin-tails with white ribbons. This visually creates a translucent yet dynamic look. Combined with the black sailor beret and golden badge decoration, it perfectly blends the liveliness and playfulness of a seafaring girl. Regarding the costume details, the top features a black sailor collar with white trim, and a heart-shaped cutout with cross-lacing at the chest, which brings a hint of Gothic mystery while retaining feminine softness. The inner layer consists of cascading white ruffles, while the outer layer is a short black wavy skirt hem. Paired with white over-the-knee socks and platform black Mary Jane shoes, the entire silhouette looks exceptionally sharp and upright.
Special thanks this time go to the photographer Qian Dazhi. Even with the harsh outdoor lighting, we adjusted multiple angles back and forth. The first two shots taken on the steps utilized the shadows of natural sunlight to sculpt the character's silhouette. Especially in the first shot with a half-turned-back pose, combined with the surrounding green plants and metal railings, it brought out an environmental narrative akin to sailing into a harbor. The dynamic snapshot in the final photo is my personal favorite recommendation: the playful posture of lifting one leg, frozen in the exact moment the white skirt hem scatters in the wind, not only preserves the character's energy but also embodies the professionalism of cosplay in terms of action expression.
The hardest part of a location shoot is controlling the light and the surrounding environment. Although direct outdoor sunlight can make the character look striking, it's also highly prone to causing over-reflection on the makeup and costume. This demands a sufficiently clean makeup base and reasonable light and shadow adjustment in post-processing. As a cosplayer, every time I portray a highly renowned character like the Captain, it is essentially a gamble with accuracy. Not only must I fit the external details as closely as possible, but I also need to maintain a vivid, lively presence in expressions and movements. While I might not be the most veteran, my sincerity towards the work is absolutely thorough.
Looking back, this cosplay photoshoot was not merely to check something off a list, but rather a comprehensive exercise of my accumulated outdoor portrait photography expressiveness and styling coordination. The combination of the white skirt hem and black gloves is easily affected by the wind direction during actual location shoots, but adapting to these environmental factors actually allowed us to capture a more atmospheric piece of work. I hope to have the opportunity to challenge other outfits from the same series in the future, exploring the character's charm from more perspectives, and using the lens to record every instance of earnest preparation and devotion.
