Bringing Sugamo Mutsuki from the legendary Galgame Sayonara wo Oshiete to life required extensive contemplation on how to evoke her singular psychological state and elusive visual atmosphere. The wardrobe took deep research: a crisp white long-sleeved collared shirt fastened with a dark red neck ribbon, layered beneath a pale yellow knit vest edged with black piping and buttons faithful to canon. Below, a navy pleated skirt finished with two white horizontal hem stripes anchored an authentic school aesthetic. The green long wig was styled with precision—straight front bangs with two slender braids cascading over the bust, crowned with her signature ahoge cowlick. The green synthetic fibers took on a subtle, delicate gradient under warm amber illumination that I found mesmerizing.
To complement the styling, the shoot was staged inside an authentic Classroom. Wooden student desks, chairs, and the chalkboard provided immediate immersion. The chalk writings on the board were specifically requested; even when partially blurred by shallow depth of field, the interplay of Japanese and French text heightened the melancholic, disorienting undertones of the story. Warm-toned side lighting was chosen to evoke the lonely nostalgia of a fading sunset.
The makeup steered clear of heaviness, focusing instead on capturing fragile vulnerability. Light-colored contact lenses paired with defined lower lashes and aegyo-sal contouring projected an innocent, wide-eyed gaze that conveyed her hesitant, vigilant, and bewildered mindset. Footwear consisted of classic white indoor uwabaki slippers with red toe caps, worn with slouched mid-calf White stockings. The folds of the white socks were intentionally arranged; in the floor-seated shots, leg lines and knit textures rendered beautifully under the warm illumination, balancing schoolgirl authenticity with visual appeal.
Throughout the shoot, I explored a wide variety of stances—perching atop desks, curling into a ball on the floor, or standing dazed while clutching the collar ribbon. Floor-seated and kneeling poses demanded constant adjustments of skirt folds and leg positioning to find the most natural angle for her melancholic characterization. Tightly clutching the red ribbon with unfocused eyes required rapid emotional immersion to project helpless dread. Twirling a braid also required rehearsing finger tension and eye direction to ensure authentic subtlety. Sitting on the bare classroom floor for hours was taxing, but the resulting captures made every moment worthwhile, preserving the delicate light and unspoken emotions of that space.
