This Ram Maid outfit from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- took an entire afternoon of effort in the studio. From trying on the costume to adjusting the lighting, we shot six different looks back and forth. Although it was the classic Maid outfit, we put a lot of work into the overall coordination and studio texture this time. The black-and-white dress has plenty of ruffles; to keep the outfit from looking bulky, special attention was paid to tightening the waistline when wearing it. The black corseted pinafore dress combined with the white apron and several dainty bow decorations across the abdomen added great points in front of the lens.
The wig is a bright pink short style, trimmed to closely fit the face shape. For hair accessories, a white rose headband, purple bow ribbons, and crossed bobby pins on the bangs were used. To bring the makeup closer to an anime feel, besides wearing reddish-brown colored contacts, the eye contours were deliberately deepened, which, together with the orange-red lip makeup, instantly brought out the facial dimensionality. The makeup process really tested patience: the base had to be clean and translucent without losing dimensionality, and the eye details required repeated smudging to make the eyes look more spirited.
During the shoot, the photographer provided extensive guidance on lighting. For instance, in the shot sitting on the deep red leather sofa, light filtering through the softbox on the side sharply defined the contrast between the white stockings and black Mary Janes, while beautifully accentuating the leg lines. Hand gestures were also designed; whether gently lifting the skirt hem or holding a tray with bread props, the goal was to keep the frame from looking too rigid. There was also a pose lying on the carpet where, to look natural, the upper body was slightly lifted and the gaze toward the camera carried a touch of laziness.
Ram's expression is actually quite tricky to master. She usually appears aloof and even occasionally sharp-tongued, but inside she is very delicate. Therefore, in front of the lens, I deliberately controlled the intensity of my gaze. For example, during the over-the-shoulder glance, tucking the chin slightly made the gaze look both confident and tinged with a slight sense of detachment. When sitting, keeping the back straight and legs crossed not only created good poise, but also maximized the matching effect of the costume and white stockings. When walking and standing, opening up the shoulders without cowering was necessary to support the volume of this outfit.
This shoot was completed at the Qimi Huanjing studio. The space was very large, and the solid-colored backdrop paper made it easy to highlight the main subject. Working on a mutual-TFP basis with the photographer, our communication was smooth throughout. Before shooting, we looked at reference pictures together to discuss movement and composition details, providing feedback to each other during the shoot. Because this outfit has many accessories and layers, dressing and organizing took some time, but thankfully the final texture made it feel completely worthwhile.
Doing cosplay for me is like experiencing another life; putting on these clothes and standing before the camera makes me unconsciously approach the character's state. From adjusting the curve of the wig to controlling finger placement and the focal point of the gaze, every step is fascinating. This set of photos has both casual interactive vibes and deliberate studio line displays, serving as a comprehensive attempt. That's all for today's share; I hope to pass on the joy of this shoot to all of you.
