This Japanese style cosplay derivative look for Rem from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- was prepared with immense care recently. For the wig styling, I chose a bright blue shoulder-length cut with trimmed texturing, allowing the tips to curl inward naturally. The pink floral hair accessory pinned to the right side adds a pop of contrasting color against the cool-toned blue hair. Since my phone covered my face in this Mirror selfie, the visual center of gravity focused entirely on the hairstyle and fabric textures.
For wardrobe, I chose a modified kimono featuring a white body with blue trim. The neckline and cuffs have crisp blue piping, and the wide sleeves drape gracefully—lightly grasping the cuffs makes arm lines appear more slender in photos. On the dark-blue obi sash around the waist, a thin pink cord was added to echo the hair accessory. When wearing a kimono with a wide obi sash, cinching it snugly is essential to accentuate the waistline and prevent the silhouette from looking bulky.
The lower half was paired with pure white over-the-knee socks, commonly known as White stockings. If pure White stockings are visually plain, the legs lack dimensional depth. Therefore, I added thin blue cross-tied straps around my thighs; this criss-cross design not only injects visual interest, but also segments the leg lines visually. The floral print on the left white stocking was a deliberate design touch that broke up the monochrome tone. In a seiza kneeling pose, it showcased the synergy between White stockings and lace-up straps to great effect. When picking White stockings, I typically choose snag-resistant materials with slight compression, offering a snugger fit that resists wrinkling.
The shoot was staged indoors, utilizing a mirror for a Mirror selfie. The backdrop was a clean white wall decorated with anime stickers, infusing playful 2D flair into the scene. A white floral motif on the floor in front mirrored the floral print on the stockings. This Mirror selfie approach requires no complex studio lighting; by finding the right angle and covering the face with the phone, the visual focus shifts squarely to wardrobe styling and body language. For framing, I kept the figure filling the frame comfortably without crowding the borders.
Although the phone obscured most of the makeup, the eye makeup retained clean, translucent tones matching the overall fresh aesthetic. With white-based Japanese style cosplay costumes, wrinkles are the biggest enemy, so I meticulously steamed everything flat beforehand. White stockings must likewise remain pristine, free of dirt or snags, as these fine details dictate the overall quality of the image. Across the shoot, this casual yet anime-inspired Japanese style cosplay proved ideal for indoor shoots—requiring no exaggerated poses, where sitting quietly yields stunning photos.
