For this convention, I chose to cosplay Rem in her cat-ear maid outfit. I woke up bright and early to do my makeup and put on the wig, aiming to achieve the best possible result. Light blue wigs can easily appear frizzy under direct lighting, so I conditioned, smoothed, and styled it the day before, trimming the bangs to ensure they framed my face cleanly. In terms of eye makeup, I chose vibrant blue contacts paired with pinkish lower eyeshadow and a glossy orange lip glaze. To avoid looking washed out before the lens, I applied a solid, velvety foundation base with a slightly bolder wash of blush.
When I first unpacked the costume, it felt impressively substantial—tiers of lace and ruffled frills look stunningly elaborate, though putting it on was genuinely complicated. The corset lacing at the back required a helping hand to cinch down, and the white lace high collar paired with light blue lace-up cords and bell accents created an extraordinarily detailed chest piece. To prevent wardrobe malfunctions while pacing the busy convention hall, I secured everything with fashion tape and safety pins. The plush white tail was anchored by a waist strap; carrying slight heft, it demanded conscious core engagement while walking to keep it from dragging on the floor or wrapping around my legs. The over-the-knee white stockings featured delicate lace bands at the cuffs, paired with chunky-heeled light blue Mary Janes that kept walking fairly stable.
Upon stepping into the venue, the lively bustle was immediately palpable. Partnering with my photographer, who was shooting on a Sony A7C2, we scouted a few spots around the halls with relatively clean backgrounds. Since the attire is light in color, a cluttered background or overly dim lighting could easily make the whites look muddy and grey. We intentionally avoided high-density foot-traffic corridors, choosing spots shielded by exhibition partitions where overhead hall lighting was comparatively diffused. The biggest challenge was kinetic fluidity. Even with a white tablet prop in hand, I explored various spunky poses true to the cat-ear maid aesthetic—touching a finger gently to my lip, lifting one leg, or angling slightly in profile to display the curve of the tail.
Several actions seen in the photos took multiple takes to lock down. For instance, the shot lifting one leg backward demanded steady balance while ensuring both the skirt flare and the tail retained organic motion—a slight slip in center of gravity instantly made the pose look rigid. For the frames holding the tablet, we coordinated to project an airy, effortless mood, steering clear of stiff, planted posturing. The photographer continuously cued me to keep my gaze soft rather than locking eyes rigidly on the camera, suggesting subtle sideways glances.
Convention floors are notoriously grueling on camera autofocus and tracking speed, particularly as passing attendees constantly interrupt framing. During shooting lulls, we kept an eye on lighting shifts, adjusting positions whenever top-down ambient lights proved too harsh, or using a reflector to bounce soft fill onto my face. While this dress is breathtaking, wearing it for hours inevitably left strap marks on my shoulders and waist, prompting several brief breathers.
The overall shoot was wonderfully relaxed, with our photographic chemistry growing increasingly seamless. Reviewing raw previews on camera and seeing those dynamic beats frozen in time made every bit of fatigue from straightening skirts, touching up makeup, and hunting angles feel entirely worthwhile. My personal favorite from this set is the full-length shot balancing on one leg—it beautifully showcases the intricate garment tiers and fluid leg lines accentuated by the white stockings, all with effortless grace.
