[Patchouli cosplay] Touhou Project Hatsumonogatari Anime Convention Day 3 Photos, A Journey in Light Purple and Black Lace

Spending a day wandering in front of the convention booths, I found that the foot traffic on Day 3 of Hatsumonogatari was unexpectedly light. Everyone was discussing how the CP expo might have diverted a lot of people, but for getting good cosplay photos, fewer people is actually a huge advantage. Not only did we not have to wait in long lines for popular spots, but the background on the ground also looked clean and tidy, allowing us to find the right composition more calmly without worrying about a background full of random passersby.

Today, I unlocked this fan-design style for Patchouli that I've wanted to try for a long time, mainly referring to a lighter and more gorgeous design. Compared to the heavy layering of the original work, this fan-design reduces the oppressive feeling of multiple fabric layers, opting instead for a large amount of transparent black lace, spliced and stacked ruffles, and soft mesh netting. The three-dimensional lavender fabric rose at the collar, paired with the dense metal ring straps at the waist, is highly eye-catching. Along with the wide black lace sleeves draping down from both shoulders, though the overall look appears intricate and gorgeous, it didn't feel heavy or oppressive when actually worn, especially during movement.

However, the price for a lightweight fan-design is that it's indeed a bit "thin." Although it looks bright and sunny in the photos, the outdoor temperature in Guangzhou recently still carries a touch of chill; when the wind blows, the openwork black lace can't block it at all. Fortunately, I was well-prepared and secretly pasted four heat patches on my chest and lower back, which allowed me to maintain my body temperature under the afternoon sun and kept me from shrinking from the cold wind halfway through the shoot. Especially when tidying the skirt hem during breaks, I always felt the materials for this outfit were truly exquisite; the splicing of different textures gave it a very rich quality under the light, making it truly a good piece of clothing worthy of serious appreciation.

For the photography, I must give a huge thanks to the divine photographer @柠檬路 (Lemon Road) teacher! The outdoor angles he found this time were highly ingenious, especially when snapping the half-body close-ups and my movements with the quill pen, perfectly capturing the cool detachment the character should have. For Patchouli, besides the signature purple hair and monocle, I really wanted to present her quiet and slightly lazy ambiance. The quill pen in my hand served as an excellent prop—whether casually spinning it or holding it quietly, combined with this black lace overskirt featuring a long train, it felt like a wonderful blend of classical and mysterious elements.

Speaking of "a character I've wanted to cosplay many times," Patchouli is truly a special existence in my Touhou project plan. The color scheme of this outfit is a classic blend of black, light purple, and light pink, paired with that soft-brimmed hat adorned with ruffles, appliques, and bows. Walking under the outdoor sunlight, the aura filtering through the black lace appeared exceptionally soft. Fortunately, the final look basically recreated the visual image I had conceived in my mind months ago.

As for the Hatsumonogatari Anime Convention itself, if it weren't for the timing clashing exactly with the CP expo, this place could truly become a treasure trove perfect for casual convention strolling. Because of the light crowd, socially anxious cosplayers can drop their burdens and wander freely between the venue and the streets. During the shoot, I chatted with a few passing fellow fans and found that everyone was well-aware of the source of this costume design, and we also chatted about recently favored Touhou music and doujinshi.

Perhaps because there really weren't many people on Day 3, the quality of the entire photo set turned out even better than expected. The light happened to be at its gentlest in the afternoon, and the contrast between the light purple wig and the black lace made the softness of the photos just right. I tried standing, sitting, and kneeling poses during the shoot, and the drape and fluffiness of the skirt hem were different in each stance. I particularly like the composition where I sat on the ground, with the skirt hem spread casually across the floor; the furry slippers and the intricate black dress formed a very cozy contrast, adding a bit of casual comfort from daily life to the originally gorgeous outfit.

Being able to successfully complete this Patchouli shoot counts as fulfilling a long-awaited dream. The venue atmosphere of the Hatsumonogatari Anime Convention and the precise snapshots of the photographer left me with nothing but beautiful memories to look back on today. I feel that if given the chance in the future, unlocking this character's daily or combat state with a classic prop like a magic book would also be highly entertaining.
