Yesterday, after wrapping up this Fireworks portrait shoot of a night scene, I organized my thoughts while retouching photos. Holding sparklers, light burst forth the moment they were ignited. Lighting in the pitch-dark night isn't easy; relying solely on sparklers can easily cause overly high contrast or increased noise in the image. So before the shoot, the photographer and I coordinated camera parameters in advance and shot directly with a wide aperture. To recreate Yuu's perspective, I intentionally pointed the sparkler toward the left side of the frame, letting the flying sparks form the foreground so that the image gains visual layering without obscuring the character completely behind the glare.
Speaking of the wig, before heading out today, I carefully trimmed the sideburns because Mikaela Hyakuya's hairstyle is blonde, slightly messy and unruly, with a little topknot at the crown. To maintain this style all day, I secured it slightly with hairspray, but the bangs still needed some airy lightness to avoid looking stiff. The outfit consists of a white coat over a black inner layer; the golden ring clasp at the collar and the geometric black buckle at the waist are crucial accents, as the texture of such accessories directly dictates the photo's refinement. During shooting, we actually ran into a rather funny little episode. Because I was wearing a pure white coat with a somewhat loose fit, and constantly shifted poses to find better angles, sparks easily flew onto the garment. My friend beside me looked and said, "Look at your sleeve!" I looked down and saw two or three small yellowish holes burned into the white fabric. While repairing or embroidering over them at home might take some time, it unexpectedly became an exclusive, limited "battle-damaged" souvenir for this set of photos.
I've always believed Mikaela Hyakuya cosplay isn't just about looking like the character, but capturing the character's expression and demeanor at that exact moment. Mikaela carries a temperament of maintaining elegance and resilience even in dire circumstances, so instead of forcing an exaggerated smile, I tried to express a gaze filled with complex emotions. In low light Night photography, the demands on catchlights are extremely high; without a gleam in the eyes, one's spirit looks completely exhausted. Fortunately, the sparklers were bright enough to leave beautiful reflections in the pupils, instantly breathing soul into the facial expressions. In Photo 2, the photographer applied a warm-toned filter specifically to emphasize the clash between the quietness of the night and the brilliance of fireworks; I personally feel this hazy ambiance holds immense storytelling value.
After finishing this Cosplay photoshoot, we discussed among ourselves that many cosplayers are terrified of getting their clothes dirty or torn during shoots, but fireworks inherently carry unpredictability. The trajectory of sparks from each burn is different, and fallen ash or burned holes represent a certain sense of authenticity. While everyone wants pristine final shots, I feel these accidental little flaws let people see the warmth in the shooting process. In my mind, the line "Look, Yuu!" kept flashing; though I was holding the sparklers alone, with this angle and composition, it truly felt like standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Yuu under the night sky in Seraph of the End.
Looking through the photos later, I thought that if I shoot this genre again in the future, maybe I could bring flame-retardant gloves or wear a windproof, fire-resistant outer smock so I can move with larger, uninhibited motions. Right now, some poses were still a bit restrained out of fear of burning the clothes. Overall, though, it was thoroughly worth it; whether in managing ambient atmosphere or presenting costume details, it was a very satisfying attempt at Fireworks portrait and Night photography.
This cosplay process really made me feel the magic born from combining photography and roleplay. From choosing the character and preparing the costumes and props to coordinating camera angles and lighting with the photographer, every step was full of challenges and the unknown. In the end, at the click of the shutter, the brilliance of the sparklers froze that fleeting beauty, making that little topknot I spent all morning tying completely worthwhile. I hope to share more beloved characters and better works with everyone in the future.
