The Cosplay convention photos of Mami Tomoe in a Chinese style cheongsam from Firefly ACG Expo are finally organized. I always wanted to shoot a look combining traditional elements with ACG aesthetics, and when I saw this cheongsam design, I decided to try it without hesitation. Putting together this character came with special feelings—from the wig and makeup to every fold of the outfit, I communicated thoroughly with the makeup artist and photographer for a long time.
Speaking of the outfit, it's a modified Chinese style cheongsam in a refreshing peach-orange tone. The fabric features delicate jacquard dark patterns, giving the entire outfit a high-end texture that glows softly under the convention hall lights. The collar is a classic mandarin collar with handmade frog buttons, while tied ribbons add a playful design touch. What I love most are the ruffles at the shoulders and cuffs, paired with my long white gloves, perfectly blending classical grace with youthful charm.
To complement this outfit, the hairstyle was specially styled with two round, fluffy hair buns, adorned with matching white lace decorations and long pale yellow ribbons. When moving, the ribbons glide naturally over my shoulders, adding great dynamic energy. For makeup, warm yellow tones were chosen to echo the blonde hair, paired with very clear amber-colored contacts to make the eyes look bright and lively.
The crowd at the convention hall was extremely dense, and it took a while to find a suitable camera spot. Our photographer was very professional, using the venue's overhead lights and backlighting to create beautiful lens flare effects. Opening the aperture wide completely blurred out passing background crowds, filling the atmosphere around me and this outfit to the brim in this Anime-style photography session.
There were many fun anecdotes during shooting. Due to heavy foot traffic, taking a stand at that spot filled with light spots required dodging passersby every time, but thankfully the photographer was fast at capturing moments. Many fellow fans who love this character recognized me along the way, making the sense of resonance brought by cosplay feel truly magical. Walking through the hall in this outfit was tiring, but I received so much encouragement and goodwill.
We shot several different poses in total: gentle poses with hands crossed, interactive moments reaching out toward the camera, as well as turning around for a backward glance and posing with one hand on the hip. During shooting, I tried my best to adjust my shoulder position to make myself look taller and more upright. Wearing a cheongsam actually places high demands on posture; the back must stay straight to highlight the outfit's silhouette. So even though it was a convention, I couldn't relax as usual and kept myself upright to maintain poise.
Regarding light and shadow, I really love the backlit feel during the shoot, with light hitting from above just right, making hair edges glisten. I don't shoot convention sets often, but this attempt in terms of both styling and final photos felt very satisfying. If you go to conventions, you can also try this bright, translucent shooting style; wide aperture plus backlighting really creates soft and dreamy results.
This post mainly highlights garment cuts and styling details, so selected poses were restrained and natural without overly exaggerated gestures. Yet being able to present this quiet atmosphere relied heavily on the venue lighting. Great finished photos truly depend on careful makeup preparation beforehand and active communication on site, making this a great recap experience.
