The Cosplay convention photos I took today at the Chengdu World Line Anime Exhibition are finally retouched and ready to share! Truth be told, the temperature was quite low that evening, but seeing how gorgeous the finished shots turned out, every bit of the effort was worthwhile.
Let's talk about the costume details first. The entire look is a pure white Ancient style cosplay silhouette. The upper bodice features a mandarin collar paired with a teardrop-shaped keyhole cutout across the chest, preventing it from feeling overly stuffy. The fabric choice was superb, boasting subtle jacquard cloud patterns across the surface, lined with a soft lilac-pink interior that immediately introduces dimensional layering. The sleeves are wide, flowing sleeves draped with semi-translucent sheer chiffon; whenever I walked or struck a pose, this gossamer fabric cascaded naturally into lovely, fluid ripples. The lower half features a white miniskirt bordered with lace trim, draped over with a long sheer chiffon overlay that billows gracefully with every movement. To complement the pristine all-white palette, I paired White stockings with off-white chunky-heeled tall boots. This pairing not only elongated my leg lines but also kept the lower half visually grounded in the night scenes without feeling top-heavy.
The prop is a white weapon crafted with a jade-like translucent sheen, tied with a delicate red cord and long tassels. This splash of red was crucial, breaking up the monochrome white and creating a captivating visual anchor for the frame. For hair accessories, I wore white floral pieces paired with translucent beaded strands. The hairstyle featured straight blunt bangs with slender side braids framing my cheeks, which, combined with blue-violet colored contacts and accentuated eye makeup, shaped a calm, aloof, and ethereal aesthetic.
Regarding makeup, I poured substantial effort into the eye makeup. Because the contact lenses leaned blue-violet, I laid down an earthy neutral eyeshadow base topped with a dusting of fine glitter to preserve the gaze's depth. I opted for clustered individual false lashes to enlarge the eyes naturally without looking artificial. Since the outfit is pure white, overly understated makeup would get washed out by the garments; thus, I selected coral blush and lipstick to enhance my complexion, maintaining a healthy flush even beneath cool-toned studio lights.
Next came prop handling. Posing with this white weapon was tricky given its elongated shape. After experimenting with various angles, I discovered that extending the lines of my arms along the trajectory of the blade yielded the most expansive, graceful silhouette. The red tassels stood out brilliantly in the night; with a gentle flick, the candid captures evoked the poetic charm of wuxia and xianxia romance.
As for the garment's tailoring, despite the wide flowing sleeves, the cut across the shoulders and waist remains snugly contoured without adding bulk. The multi-tiered skirt hem can be easily stepped on while walking, so during full-body captures, I deliberately slowed down my motions, using the inertia of turns to let the skirt unfurl naturally.
The hardest part of nighttime Cosplay convention photos is the lighting. Outside the venue, the backdrop is pitch-black; without sufficient illumination, the subject gets swallowed by darkness, yet lighting that is too harsh strips away the ethereal, immortal aura. The photographer provided soft fill lighting from the front while preserving bokeh from distant streetlights in the background, creating wonderful spatial depth. In pose choreography, I maximized the prop and billowy sleeves—holding the weapon horizontally while making hand seal gestures with the other hand, or spinning mid-turn to fling the skirt and sheer chiffon into motion. Dynamic action shots are vastly more expressive than static posing; convention photos thrive on spontaneous energy and tension.
Lastly, the expo ambiance: foot traffic at the Chengdu World Line Anime Exhibition was immense, making it quite a feat to secure a clean nighttime background. Due to intricate lighting conditions, the discard rate was rather high. Fortunately, the curated final images met all my expectations in composition and lighting. Night portrait photography ultimately tests one's command of light; once light and shadow are mastered, stunning frames follow naturally. Overall, shooting these Convention photos at the Chengdu World Line Anime Exhibition was a wonderful experience with an incredible vibe, and this Ancient style cosplay look truly shone in the night.
