After wrapping up the SSSS.Gridman Rikka Takarada shoot in the White studio at Youzi Photography Studio, the final results turned out much cleaner and crisper than anticipated. The core focus of this session was clear: portraying Rikka's everyday yet subtly detached atmosphere against a pure white backdrop, while doing justice to her iconic, recognizable Thick thighs.
First, the wardrobe and styling prep: to capture Rikka's Campus style charm, I selected a soft, lightweight knit cardigan so it wouldn't look bulky under bright lights. The wine-red bow tie and pleated skirt length were checked thoroughly against references, while wine-red crew socks paired with black platform patent leather shoes flattered the leg contours. Trimming the wig was a massive task—the blunt bangs and shoulder-length bob needed to look natural without feeling stiff, with fine stray hairs left intentionally to enhance realism. For makeup, the blue colored contacts were the soul of the look, paired with generous pink blush swept across the cheeks and under-eyes to recreate her signature features. The yellow scrunchie around the wrist was an indispensable touch.
White studio shoots heavily test lighting and composition. With an ultra-clean background, slight lighting missteps can flatten the subject and ruin dimensional depth. The photographer, Hongbai, utilized expansive soft lights, ensuring skin looked luminous and translucent while keeping the weave texture of the white cardigan distinctly visible. A major advantage of a pure white background is the absence of visual noise, drawing the viewer's gaze entirely toward body language and textile textures.
Regarding poses to showcase her Thick thighs, we tested numerous setups on set. The seated pose with crossed legs on a chair in the first photo felt casual, yet risked visually compressing leg proportions; touching my hair and holding the hair tie added dynamic interest to the upper body to keep the frame lively. The shot that truly shined was the second composition seated on the school desk: one leg raised with the foot resting flat on the tabletop while the other draped down naturally. This posture stretched the leg lines to their fullest, allowing the subtle curves and lighting on the thighs to stand out strikingly in the white space. Leaning back slightly with my weight resting on my left hand behind me, I met the camera with a calm, languid gaze rather than an overly eager expression. The water bottle under the desk and the black backpack hanging nearby provided great contextual immersion.
Controlling the center of gravity and joint angles was pivotal. The foot planted on the desk had its toes tilted slightly upward, using the thick platform shoe to create visual weight contrasting with the leg lines. I continually refined my seating angle so the thighs wouldn't look awkwardly compressed, maintaining a smooth, healthy silhouette.
The entire shoot went effortlessly. Ambient bounce from the white cyclorama preserved natural skin textures without needing aggressive post-retouching. For school uniform characters, fluid limbs and relaxed expressions matter far more than elaborate props—grounding the everyday casualness and organic bodily form delivers the strongest visual impact.
