The original concept for this shoot was to capture an authentic mood—one suffocated by academic pressure yet bathed in a nostalgic youth filter. During prep, we gathered stacks of test papers and study handouts, along with classic red-and-yellow motivational banners, plastering them across walls, windows, and even the ceiling, with honor certificates scattered throughout to build a suffocating sense of being completely engulfed by studies. For the outfit, I chose a classic white and blue sailor-style JK uniform with a red bow tie at the collar. To embody that slightly nerdy yet stubborn girl-next-door student persona, I wore a black short bob wig and thick black-rimmed glasses. The bottom was a navy blue pleated skirt, paired with white mid-calf socks and chunky black platform loafers. The color scheme is clean and crisp, and the classic styling perfectly fits the theme of returning to high school days.
The shooting process was actually much more demanding than anticipated. To find the right lighting and compositions, I had to constantly switch poses around the window sill, wooden student desks, and chairs. Because the space was entirely filled with hanging paper, movement was severely cramped, and any small shift risked brushing against cascading exam sheets. The photographer waited a long time to catch the moments when natural light spilled through the window, and we used those brief intervals to continuously dial in our expressions. To convey different moods, I experimented with various gestures: adjusting my glasses with one hand while looking into the lens, spacing out with a pen, holding a heavy textbook on the window sill, or simply crossing my legs leaning against the wall baseboard. These poses were intentionally designed to break away from stiff, posed portraits and make the frames feel lived-in and dynamic.
When it comes to Campus style portrait photography, there are a few practical details worth sharing. In front of the camera, seated postures are crucial in dictating the visual balance. When sitting down, I make sure to smooth out the pleated skirt so the folds fan out naturally, crossing my legs to flatter the leg lines—which, elongated by the white socks and loafers, significantly enhances body proportions. Gaze direction and emotional delivery are equally vital; you don't need a forced smile. A look tinged with fatigue, languor, or quiet confusion often carries far more narrative weight and emotional resonance than a simple grin, instantly evoking those lazy study hall afternoons spent daydreaming out the window.
Even though we were trapped in a room choked with sheets of paper and the heavy smell of ink, restricted to the tiny confines between desks and window sills while constantly taking care not to tear down the taped tests, seeing that rich nostalgia and authentic Youth campus ambiance in the final images made every bit of trouble worthwhile. Every time I shoot this theme, putting on the uniform and sitting behind a wooden desk truly feels like reliving that exhausting yet intensely fulfilling chapter of high school.
