This outdoor photoshoot for Yae Sakura took about two weeks of preliminary preparation. To restore the character's temperament that combines both gentleness and an eerie allure, I put a lot of effort into the costume and props. The wig was chosen in a light cherry blossom pink and trimmed with layers to ensure a fluffy and lightweight effect under the sunlight. The animal ears on top of the head are made of plush material with internal wire shaping for easy angle adjustment. The blue flowers and red rope knots in the accessories are all matched one-to-one based on the original design.
The shooting location was chosen as a traditional Japanese tatami room with a courtyard. Opening the shoji door, the pink cherry blossom tree outside was in full bloom, and the light passed through the translucent paper windows, casting warm and gentle light and shadow on the tatami mats. The red-and-white Japanese-style outfit I wore featured an outer layer of pink wide sleeves with a sheer gauze texture, which fluttered with the wind when walking. To match the overall styling, I wore blue contact lenses and held a white round paper fan painted with petals. The white stockings on my feet paired with red straps also added some visual layering even while sitting.
The shooting process was more physically demanding than expected. Since the venue was laid with tatami mats, kneeling and cross-legged sitting postures required constant adjustments of the center of gravity. The photographer asked me to try side-tilting, facing the lens directly, and half-covering my face with the paper fan to capture different emotions. When the sunlight hit from the side, the control of facial shadows was crucial. I would slightly turn my head to match the lighting angle, making the catchlights in my eyes more translucent. The neckline and back design of this outfit have some skin exposure, but in the environment of the Japanese-style courtyard, I wanted to present elegance rather than mere visual stimulation, so I kept my posture as natural and relaxed as possible.
The cherry blossom element ran through the entire shoot. In addition to the real outdoor cherry blossom tree, I specially placed a white porcelain wine pot and cups on a straw-woven tray beside me, sitting on a pink small cushion patterned with flower petals, giving the picture more daily life flavor. From the final photos, the foreground framing sense of the composition well highlighted the subject, and the blurred wooden door edges increased the depth of the photo.
In terms of makeup, the focus was on the eye makeup. To match the color of the contact lenses, the eyeshadow used a pink-orange series with fine shimmer, and the eyeliner was slightly upturned to add a trace of allure. The base makeup pursued clarity and lightness so that it wouldn't look heavy under natural light. Since the shooting environment had many wooden structures, a slightly warm-toned highlighter made the skin look more translucent.
Regarding the character Yae Sakura, I've always felt she has a complex sense of contradiction within her—gentle in appearance and lively with fox ears, yet her background story carries a bit of tragedy. Therefore, when portraying her, I didn't choose overly sweet expressions; instead, I expressed her inner steadiness through a slight lowering of the head, a somewhat scrutinizing gaze, or a thoughtful state. The restrictive feeling of the Japanese-style clothing actually helped me better enter the character's state. Because movement was restricted, every action needed to be more deliberate, which happened to fit the character's own elegant setting.
Midway through the shoot, a gust of wind blew down quite a few cherry blossoms, and we hurriedly captured a few dynamic shots of falling petals. Although the shoot ended with grass clippings and petals sticking to me, this is precisely the fun of outdoor shooting. The entire team cooperated very tacitly, from lighting to makeup and styling, everyone served the final effect. This set of pictures is not only a tribute to the character, but also an important accumulation for myself on the path of cosplay.
