[Rem cosplay] Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- White Studio Angel Styling - Image 1

This Rem angel look was completed entirely in a seamless pure white studio. I chose this costume because I was longing to capture an extreme sense of pristine purity and holiness. To align with the angel theme, I specially prepared oversized white feathered wings and a floating halo. Wearing and rigging these props placed quite a demand on balance and anchoring techniques—especially the wing bases, which needed to be strapped tightly against my back using invisible harness bands to keep them from wobbling front-to-back during movement. The halo above my head was anchored into the wig using fine wire; even the slightest tilt would break the illusion on camera, so every repositioning required immense care regarding head orientation.

For pose reference, instead of standard upright standing, I designed a suspended semi-crouching floating stance. This posture needed to convey weightless buoyancy while keeping the muscles from looking visibly strained. During the shoot, legs were tucked with toes naturally pointing downward, and hands spread gently outward, as if I had just touched down or were on the verge of taking flight. Gazing downward lent a serene, peaceful aura. To hold this posture rock-steady without swaying, my core had to stay locked in; after just a few takes, my legs were already burning. Photographer Xu 40 guided my breathing continuously from the sidelines, reminding me to relax my neck and shoulders so that gravity-defying sense of floating could truly emerge.

Huge thanks to photographer Xu 40—lighting a pure white cyc studio tests gradient layering immensely. An all-white backdrop can easily swallow up subject contours, but Xu 40 utilized softboxes masterfully to sculpt clean outlines—particularly the shadows of the wings, which cast soft, delicate reflections across the bounce boards to add spatial dimension. On set, we intentionally laid down a high-gloss reflective floor sheet so the reflections melted naturally into the frame. For makeup, since the palette was entirely white, I chose cool-toned pastel eyeshadows paired with the light-blue wig, ensuring my face wouldn't wash out against the pure white setting. The wig was trimmed closely to frame my cheeks, keeping the bangs slightly plush to enhance that anime hair-strand texture.

Stepping into Rem's angel concept was a fascinating creative exploration for me. In the original series, Rem is usually remembered in her iconic maid uniform or casual attire; transforming into a pure white-winged angel allowed me to tap into her quiet, compassionate side. Although tiring before retouching, the resulting imagery aligned wonderfully with what I envisioned.

Shooting in a white studio sets an extremely high bar for wardrobe details: the lace trim, arm sleeves, and sock covers (White stockings) must be thoroughly steamed and smoothed beforehand, leaving zero room for noticeable wrinkles or blemishes. Because the lighting was so intense, I bumped the contrast slightly in post-production to let the individual textures of hair fibers and feathers stand out crisply. The delicate lace trim along the shoes was also ironed prior to departing, ensuring complete tonal harmony across the frame. For pose inspiration, I referenced numerous statues and frozen moments from ballet dancers, fusing them with anime character aesthetics to arrive at this suspended crouching posture. This shoot was an ongoing process of refining minute details; mastering the harmony between light, shadow, and character texture remains an ever-evolving journey along my cosplay path.
