For this 2D cosplay character, it took about a month of busy work from conceiving the makeup and styling to preparing the props. To capture that cool and ethereal feel of the character, the trimming of the wig and the treatment of the hair roots alone were adjusted repeatedly several times. Paired with the elf ears and custom headpiece, the overall look finally found its desired state in front of the lens.
Regarding this costume, the biggest design challenge actually lay not in the complex white silhouettes and silver pauldrons, but in the blue-and-purple gradient of the skirt and the layered stacking of white tulle. The outer semi-transparent fabric is very soft, but after being layered up, it can reveal a subtly glowing, dreamy texture under the studio lights. However, walking in it is indeed a bit inconvenient, especially when turning around, as I need to constantly watch the coordination between the skirt hem and the props.
Let's talk about the bow prop in my hand—it is much heavier than anticipated. Not only did we need to ensure the stability of the bow's structure, but we also had to maintain the proper curve for the aesthetic. The posture of drawing the bow in the photos actually requires finding the right center of gravity, because the arm needs to exert force without looking too stiff on camera. Fortunately, communication with the photographer was highly efficient. Using a low-angle shot looking up, he beautifully amplified the layered expanse of the tulle skirt while preserving that poised, ready-to-release tension within the frame.
For the makeup, I didn't include too many flashy elements; the focus was on using highlights to emphasize facial contours and the overall color coordination with the hair. The eyeshadow utilized faint blue-purple tones and fine glitter to echo the primary colors of the costume. The entire photoshoot lasted for about five or six hours, during which I had to constantly adjust the pearl and petal embellishments in the hair. Although it was an indoor studio shoot, we kept fine-tuning the positions of the lights to find the lightness that best fits the setting.
Overall, although this Cyrene Cosplay from Honkai: Star Rail involved numerous details from early preparation to final execution, the final edits met my expectations perfectly. Every prop and accessory has its purpose in the final photos, and this collaboration as part of my Cosplay photography journey has given me more experience in recreating these ethereal characters for a fantasy style cosplay project.
