Traveling to the Inspiration & Innovation Exhibition Hall in Pazhou, Guangzhou, for the 3rd Black Dragonfly Anime Convention, I chose to portray Asuna from Azur Lane. Preparations kicked off half a month in advance, ranging from carefully styling and setting the wig to confirming micro-details on the black patent-leather bodice and pleated skirt—checking every element repeatedly. To faithfully recreate the character's sharp tactical intensity, I specifically brought along that colossal black sci-fi firearm prop as well as a combat whip; the undeniable heft of these armaments added a real physical challenge to posing throughout the day.
The venue featured a continuous 10-hour high-power air conditioning blast, a lifesaver during the summer heat. Spanning over 30,000 square meters, the convention floor hosted more than 40 bespoke scene installations and thematic zones that completely dazzled the eyes. The guest lineup brought together COKE, Tu Niang, YASAL, Zhi Yu, Xiao Yueyue, Wu Susu, Huainan Shiba, Biao Sang, Su Yi, LIV, and Baozha Xiao Kele under one roof, making the ambient energy electrifying. I moved back and forth between the main stage and the photography staging areas, greeted by immense passion from fellow creators where shared insights into character interpretation and lighting aesthetics sparked endless inspiration.
In this set of captures, I donned a modified black-and-crimson maid-inspired ensemble paired with semi-sheer black Stockings adorned with subtle jacquard patterns along the legs, aiming to highlight Asuna's blend of graceful poise and lethal combat prowess. Brandishing the sci-fi hybrid long rifle with its white color-blocked accents required deliberate core and arm stabilization; otherwise, the stance would instantly appear rigid or strained on camera. Within the dedicated photography studio, the gaffer provided exceptional lighting support, rendering both the high-contrast textile textures and smooth skin tones with striking fidelity. During a brief downtime break, I snapped playful moments interacting with a yellow plushie and the signature yellow Manjuu chick; the maid pose in Photo 9 carrying a serving tray brought an endearing touch of lighthearted whimsy to the collection.
As the convention drew to its official close on August 9, watching the crowds stream through the halls truly conveyed the collective power of people gathering for their shared passion. From cosmetics and tailoring to bespoke prop fabrication, cosplay is never merely about putting on an outfit for a quick snapshot—it represents the realization of a cohesive visual creation. Immense gratitude goes to the on-site photographers and support crew who weathered the scorching outdoor heat, continually touching up makeup and refining stances just to capture those ideal freeze-frames. This floor-wandering journey sparked fresh creative ideas for upcoming projects; I look forward to delivering even more polished work at future events and connecting with more fellow creators offline to swap craft notes.
