The battle in the photo is frozen in the hallway of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, a faithful recreation of the epic Extra Stage showdown from the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. For this shoot, my partner cosplayed Flandre Scarlet Cosplay while I took on Marisa Kirisame cosplay. This black-and-white dress paired with a white ruffled apron and platform shoes is quite heavy, and with the large petticoat, moving around in the crowded convention was no easy feat. To make the long staff prop in my hands light up, it was packed with batteries and LED strips—holding it up for an extended time made my arms ache. My friend in the red dress on the left had it just as tough: holding a plush bear in one hand and a Yin-Yang Orb prop in the other while executing various battle poses. We had rehearsed our movements several times beforehand, eager to convey that hair-trigger battle tension in front of the lens.
There were many onlookers on-site. To keep passersby out of the frame, I found a relatively open corridor, utilizing the metal railings and background blur to establish the depth of the Scarlet Devil Mansion's interior. The special effects in post-processing were added frame by frame by ourselves: the giant Yin-Yang Orb, the pinkish-purple glow, the rainbow arcs, and the sparks flying from clashing weapons all took a long time to fine-tune just to make the image look like an authentic danmaku duel. When Aya shouted from the side, 'Stop fighting, you two!', that was precisely the moment we locked eyes right before the shutter clicked—and the photographer snapped this intense face-to-face clash. Unfortunately, the raw camera files were lost during subsequent file transfers, leaving only this compressed, low-res image, which has now been restored and shared. This was more than just a routine shoot; it feels like our very own adventure memory at the Scarlet Devil Mansion. From grooming the skirt lace to wielding that rather heavy Mini-Hakkero prop, every detail embodies our love for this character and story. If you can feel that thrilling atmosphere through these images, that is all that matters.
