This shoot features Rem from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, a character I have wanted to portray for a long time.
From pre-production preparation to the official shoot, it took about two weeks. First was styling the light blue wig: to achieve a natural, inward-curling, fluffy look, I used a curling iron layer by layer to curl the ends inward, backcombed the roots for volume, and applied holding spray to prevent flattening. The length of the bangs was precise, needing to fall right over the eyebrows and eyes while leaving subtle gaps for sightlines; adjusting this to fit my facial proportions took considerable time. The yellow X-shaped hair clip and pink-lined animal ears were customized from found accessories to better suit my face shape as a Kemonomimi girl. For makeup, I selected translucent turquoise-blue colored contacts to transform my gaze, extending the eyeliner downward with accentuated aegyosal (undereye bags) to make the eyes appear larger and softer. Most importantly, pink blush was swept generously beneath the eyes to create a soft, innocent, slightly flushed look, which, paired with glossy lip tint, formed the centerpiece of this makeup. The costume chosen was a white-and-blue Lolita Maid outfit; the neckline ruffles are intricate, and the hollow lace cutout at the chest tests body contours, requiring careful undergarment pairing. To highlight the layering of the outfit, I chose a relatively static pose with fists lightly clasped in front of my chest—a pose that appears demure while fully showcasing the voluminous lace at the cuffs.
The shooting environment was a sunlit indoor room where diffuse light filtering through white curtains made the blue dress appear even more translucent, and floral background elements blended seamlessly into this dreamy ambiance. Because the costume had a high collar and heavy sleeves, maintaining proper neck and shoulder posture throughout the shoot was physically demanding. However, seeing the final photos made all the effort worthwhile. In post-processing, we preserved the dimensional depth and authentic texture of the face, focusing on color grading to give the image a bright, clean, light-blue tone without exaggerated distortion. As a cosplayer, I believe conveying a character's personality and soul is far more important than mere physical mimicry. Rem's signature blend of cool detachment and deep gentleness can be expressed through relaxed eye contact and restrained hand movements.
I also prepared extensively for facial expressions. Given her introverted nature—quiet and focused most of the time—the gaze shouldn't be overly sharp, but rather carry a soft, contemplative serenity. I deliberately directed my gaze slightly downward or relaxed my eye muscles when looking straight ahead, glancing slightly off-camera to simulate an effortless, candid look. The smile was kept subtle without pulling the corners of the mouth too high. This facial management paired with the overall makeup brought out the character's true spirit in static frames. Midway through the shoot, we swapped poses—tilting my head slightly or gently adjusting the chest ribbon with my hand—all to inject dynamic liveliness into the frame and prevent stiffness. Furthermore, with animal ears on the Lolita dress, ensuring the ears aligned naturally with body orientation was crucial to avoid awkward angles; these tiny nuances heavily influence overall completion. Maintaining fluid communication with the photographer allowed continuous micro-adjustments to capture the best moments. The fabric tended to crease easily after sitting or moving, so post-processing focused on removing excess folds while preserving fabric textures. Sitting at the vanity for nearly two hours beforehand was tiring, but seeing the final result capture such a dreamy, faithful portrayal of Rem from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- made every effort worthwhile—that is truly where the sense of fulfillment in Cosplay lies.
