The long-prepared Reimu Hakurei Cosplay set is finally out! From the initial decision to shoot to the final images, quite a few details were discussed back and forth. Differing from the traditional red shrine maiden outfit, I specially selected a heavily crafted dress featuring white and light blue tones with lace ruffles. A large bow headpiece paired with reddish-brown straight-bang twin tails aims to retain the recognition of the Touhou Project character while infusing a refreshing summer feel.
The weather on the day of the shoot was super supportive. Although there was no harsh burning sunlight, soft light broke through the cloud cover, providing excellent soft lighting conditions for backlit shooting. The location was set in an old courtyard filled with lotus flowers and bamboo; the lush green lotus leaves formed a natural photographic foreground, creating a striking light-dark contrast with the light-colored costume. Photographer @NightSky📷 was very meticulous about camera angles. To find a low-angle upward perspective, he squatted directly on the muddy ground next to the lotus leaves. This angle effectively elongates the silhouette and highlights my off-the-shoulder design and White thigh-highs outfit in the composition.
As for the details of this styling, the outfit features a slightly tapered waist cut, paired with a wide skirt with high slits and over-the-knee white socks, which echoes the traditional shrine maiden feel while adding a touch of feminine softness and subtle charm. The wand prop held during shooting was very dynamic; the blue-and-white flower decoration at the top and long light-colored ribbons swayed gently in front of the lens with movement, giving the static frame a flowing vitality. During the shoot, I continuously tweaked poses with the photographer, trying my best to express the character's lazy yet confident aura, looking directly into the lens to create a sense of interaction.
To be honest, shooting outdoors in summer wearing multi-layered lace clothing was extremely hot, and there were many mosquitoes around. However, seeing the final photos where light and shadow hit the skirt while the background green leaves dissolved into smooth bokeh made all the hard work feel completely worth it. During post-processing, we toned down the background highlights and subtly adjusted the green hue of the lotus leaves so it wouldn't steal attention from the subject, allowing visual focus to stay centered on the person.
As a Touhou fan, the classic character Reimu Hakurei is always full of creative imaginative potential. This Lotus pond photo shoot didn't deliberately pursue flashy visual effects; instead, it used realistic natural light and environmental elements to present a comfortable and dreamy Anime cosplay atmosphere. The entire shooting process was very enjoyable, giving a sense of immersion akin to sitting quietly by a midsummer lotus pond to cool off. I hope when everyone appreciates this Reimu Hakurei Cosplay set, you can also feel this sense of coolness and ease.
