[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Touhou Project Convention Photo Performance in a Chinese-Style Setting

Reimu Hakurei's costume is exceptionally classic in color scheme, combining large areas of off-white and vibrant red, accented with lace ruffles at the neckline and cuffs, topped off with a giant red bow headband that makes it instantly recognizable. For these convention photos, I chose a Chinese classical style indoor venue; the dark wooden bookshelves and daybeds anchored the outfit's airy lightness, giving the visual frame a more grounded balance.

To better display the tailoring and layers of the costume, the photographer chose a high-angle overhead shot. This not only captured the full skirt, wide sleeves, and red bow within the frame, but also highlighted the lines of the legs and white mid-calf socks, preventing the overall look from appearing bulky. The combination of white socks styling and the red-and-white dress perfectly matches the energetic vibe of the character. During shooting, I paid constant attention to the positioning of my sleeves and belt to keep wrinkles from messing up the silhouette. The texture of this outfit is actually wonderful—the red patterns on the chest and skirt include subtle jacquard details that maintain great color saturation despite the warm ambient lighting.

As a cosplayer, I feel the charm of convention photos lies in capturing that authentic 3D presence and live atmosphere, rather than relying purely on post-processing edits to cover up the original fabric texture. The set design this time was quite simple—basically a few books and simple wooden partitions—but paired with proper light, shadow, and a high camera angle, it was more than enough to create the quaint yet slightly fantasy-esque visual effect the work required.

As for the hair, I chose long straight hair with hair accessories to stay as faithful to Reimu's original look as possible, while trimming the bangs to frame my face so my forehead wouldn't look too high in top-down shots. For makeup, I avoided heavy eyeshadow and focused on an upturned eyeliner and rosy lips, creating better harmony with the red outfit. The blue cushion on the side was actually a last-minute addition; the deep blue balanced out the contrast between red and white, elevating the image's color richness to another level.

Honestly, when shooting this set, there were many other people and clutter around, but thanks to the photographer's compositional cropping, the resulting photos look very clean and sharp. This collision between a wooden background and the red-and-white color palette often appears in Touhou Project fanworks, and being able to recreate it so authentically in a real-world setting was a fantastic experience. I've always felt that the happiest part of doing cosplay isn't editing photos to look like paintings in post, but putting on the outfit at the venue and standing in that environment, experiencing that feeling of stepping right into character.

Today's convention photos captured this atmosphere perfectly—the dress folds, light and shadow shifts, and hair flow are all authentic records. The sleeves of this costume are particularly wide, fluttering with even slight movements and stacking into lovely layers when seated. Because the big head ribbon is quite exaggerated, I had to keep steady when walking and turning to prevent it from tilting. The edges of the white mid-calf socks feature lace trim that echoes the cuffs and neckline beautifully—details like these best reflect an outfit's quality, in my opinion. After all, convention photos test on-site state and coordination; with good composition and lighting, stunning shots are guaranteed.
