[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Daily Cultivation Record of the Red-and-White Shrine Maiden

A lot of thought and effort went into restoring the details of Reimu Hakurei's red-and-white color scheme shrine maiden outfit.
For this shoot, we chose two different scenes: the first features a side-sitting posture in a Japanese wooden corridor, and the second is a candid shot on outdoor rocks accompanied by a stone pagoda and ancient trees. The overall style leans toward a soft, clean tone.
Let's talk about the clothing first. The combination of the red sleeveless base dress and the large white ruffled trim I'm wearing is actually much more complex in its tailoring than the original art. The layered texture of the skirt hem is key; to create the effect of the skirt naturally spreading out when sitting down, inner linings and stiff mesh tulle were sewn inside, ensuring a nice fluffy look even in the absence of wind. The most craftsmanship-demanding part should be the detachable white sleeves. This sleeve structure tends to distort easily when posing, so to maintain its three-dimensional shape, I added boning to the edges of the fabric while sewing metal-textured bell ornaments at the armbands, which emit a faint ringing sound when walking, adding a lively touch to the expression during the shoot.
The giant red bow on top of the head is an iconic element of this styling. To ensure the bow doesn't collapse or sag outdoors due to wind or head movements, lightweight sponge and shaping wire were stuffed inside the bow. This keeps it visually very upright, and when viewed from the side, it forms a great visual balance with the red-and-white attire. The length and color of the hair were also adjusted; the reddish-brown long hair hangs right across both sides of the collarbones, and combined with the curve of the bangs, it closely matches the character's lively yet steady temperament.
For the makeup, I chose an orange-red toned eyeshadow, avoiding overly heavy eyeliner and thick flat eyebrows, opting instead for natural contour lines to define the eye shape, with a focus on enhancing a healthy complexion. The lip shade used a touch of maple red tinted lip balm, keeping the overall makeup clean and bright, allowing it to present a wonderful translucent quality under soft natural light.
The location for this shoot was a well-maintained local Japanese garden. The light and shadow in the wooden corridor around 2 to 3 PM are exceptionally gorgeous. The slanting sunlight outlines the edges of the sleeves and skirt hem, creating a beautiful transition of light and shadow. In the first picture, I am sitting sideways on a wooden bench with my legs dangling; this posture allows the chunky-heeled brown loafers to serve as a visual anchor at the bottom of the frame, while the color pairing of the white socks and shoes echoes the red-and-white elements of the upper body.
When shooting the second picture by the outdoor stone pagoda, the biggest challenge was actually the natural wind. Because the gohei consists of paper strips and red ropes, it flutters around easily with even the slightest breeze. In terms of props, the gohei I held was spliced together using a long black pole with white folded paper and red rope tassels, while spell cards were prepared separately. To capture the best state of both paper and fabric, we shot many times, constantly adjusting the direction of the paper strips.
The outdoor stone pagoda and the distant mountain background have great depth, but the accompanying issue was the harsher light right past noon. However, I retained some of the tree shadows in the background while slightly suppressing the highlights through post-processing, making the overall atmosphere of the photo closer to the slightly mysterious yet natural Gensokyo vibe of the Touhou series.
Overall, a lot of energy went into costume preparation, prop making, and location scouting for this work. Though it was quite exhausting on the day of the shoot, seeing the final photos capture that visual effect of the dual red-and-white colors against ancient architecture and greenery made it truly worthwhile. I hope this real-scene photography allows everyone to feel the character's inner calmness and serenity.
