[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Touhou Project: Convention Photos Log of the Red and White Shrine Maiden

Today I posted a set of convention photos of Reimu Hakurei. I've cosplayed this character a few times before, but every time I wear this red-and-white shrine maiden outfit, the texture captured under venue lights differs slightly. This costume has high fidelity—the main body is dark red jacquard fabric paired with large white ruffles, and the off-the-shoulder top looks clean and fresh on camera without feeling overly heavy. The sleeves are wide flare sleeves, cinched at the cuffs with ribbon accents that sway gracefully with movement alongside decorative knots, adding a touch of lively charm. For head accessories, that giant red-and-white bow is quite eye-catching and requires careful adjustment to fix atop the head. The twin tails use a wig that was meticulously trimmed and layered, tied with red ribbons to align perfectly with the character's original disposition.

Shooting on site at the convention that day, the venue featured a dark gray industrial ceiling filled with pipes and spotlights. Since this light source was quite scattered, reflector boards were specifically used during shooting to brighten my face and highlight character outlines and costume layering. This was especially effective for the dynamic pose in Photo 1 where I lightly touched down on one foot with one hand raised; the sleeves fell naturally, making the red-and-white color scheme pop strikingly against the dim background. The props held in hand were a flower wand and talismans. The wand featured a 3D cloth flower atop it with rectangular red paper slips hanging below that swayed gently with a light shake. The talismans featured red backgrounds with white characters; though lightweight in hand, casual fanning and flipping movements greatly enhanced the character's spiritual aura and everyday feel. The pairing of geta clogs with white short socks on the other foot was a unique choice; since the character wears geta barefoot, I made a slight adaptation in shoe and sock choices. Stepping on the smooth tiled floor of the venue with thick-soled geta produced a distinct rhythmic clacking sound.

During the shoot, we tried several camera positions and angles, such as the stretched dynamic candid in Photo 1, the upright standing shot in Photo 2, and the close-up half-body shot in Photo 4. Photo 4 clearly shows the pattern details on the talisman and the lace texture on the chest. Paired with clean, understated makeup and a focused gaze, the resulting impression fits her personality base—slightly cold to outsiders yet steadfast inside. In reality, the convention was packed that day, making it hard to find a clean corner uninterrupted by passersby in hallways or before booths. Fortunately, we settled on this open spot with overhead lighting; the interlocking floor tiles reflected subtle light beneath, creating a lovely contrast of light and shade with the light wooden geta soles and white socks.

The perceived temperature during shooting was actually a bit chilly. The hall's air conditioning was running high, while the costume mostly featured off-the-shoulder and light styling, forcing me to throw on a coat between shooting breaks to stay warm. However, once in character and focused on coordinating expressions and movements, I forgot about the cold altogether. These large-venue convention photos feel completely different from pure studio shoots: the convention setting brings a lively, authentic ACG gathering energy, and even though background figures were blurred out, that bustling atmosphere still leaked through the frame's edges. The red-and-white palette popped remarkably on camera, especially the interplay of light and shadow on white gauze and red silk, meaning post-processing only required simple correction of environmental light pollution without over-editing facial contours.

These photos record a slice of my convention wandering. Walking around the hall in this outfit felt perfectly integrated into the environment, leaving behind a memorable visual record of this convention trip. What I enjoy most in cosplay is this process of gradually aligning with the character and capturing her subtle demeanors on camera. Examining the final photos closely, capturing that tsundere yet straightforward spiritual charm is more than enough. Personally, compared to stiff formal posing, candid shots with ambient environmental elements and movement trends are closer to her relaxed yet sharp state, which goes to show how important the coordination of ambient lighting and character movement truly is.
