On September 9 at 9:00 PM, gathering three nines at the perfect moment, I arrived poolside in my Cirno cosplay. Choosing a waterside setting at night was primarily driven by wanting to harness water surface reflections alongside cool-toned ambient light, capturing the mystical aura of an Ice Fairy haunting the night waters.
Preparing the outfit took meticulous planning. For a blue dress shot after dark, the fabric's response under intense lighting was paramount. The outer blue textile carries subtle texture and micro-shimmer; once illuminated by ambient or strobe lights, its premium quality pops vividly. Puffy lantern sleeves and collar accents in translucent white lace provide crisp contrast against the blue silhouette. The scarlet bow tie at the chest serves as an eye-catching focal point, jumping out against cool-toned backgrounds. The translucent icicle wings behind me are filled with holographic glitter foil that refracts shimmering colors whenever light sweeps across, perfectly matching the ice-elemental lore.
For hair and makeup, the short blue-green bob required airy fluffing, ensuring the blunt bangs didn't look overly stiff. Embracing the character's signature cuteness and spunky nature, the makeup prioritized sheer radiance, accented by blue contact lenses to give the eyes spirited vitality. The thin red-rimmed glasses were an essential prop: worn, they broke up the solid blue palette; held in hand, they functioned as an expressive visual anchor adding compositional depth.
Ambient light on location was complex, dotted with numerous circular bokeh highlights that risked cluttering the frame if improperly managed. Photographers Hua Zhao and Qiu Yue tested diverse lighting setups, utilizing cool continuous rim lights to chisel out silhouettes and cleanly separate blue hair and garments from the night sky. Upward water reflections created ambient bounce light, requiring careful facial exposure control to prevent awkward shadows.
For poses, I explored two distinct moods. Photo 1 features a standing stance, one hand steadying the glasses while the other rests naturally in front—a tranquil, slightly angled pose gazing into the lens to capture curious yet guarded nocturnal presence. Photo 2 shifts into a crouch, supporting the body with one hand while holding the glasses and looking away from the camera. The crouch spreads the skirt hem organically to reveal the white pleated underskirt, while emphasizing the large back ribbon and wing geometry. Maintaining a tall spine and centered balance here was essential to avoid slouching.
Executing Night pool photography meant continuously adjusting camera angles to exclude visual background clutter. Positioning myself along specific poolside edges allowed lighting to highlight the subject cleanly. The voluminous outer skirt required careful smoothing during low poses to keep every ruffle photogenic. Wing placement was fine-tuned continuously to avoid revealing structural mounts or occluding facial features.
The entire shoot tested stamina and patience. Sustained crouching numbed my legs, and waterside night temperatures were chilly. Yet seeing the resulting interplay of light, shadow, and vivid red-blue contrast made every effort worthwhile. The palette and backdrop captured the quintessential Ice Fairy aesthetic, expressing the character's essence through wardrobe, props, and poses in a truly memorable Anime-style photography session.
