The cherry blossoms in Gensokyo are in full bloom, so I took advantage of the blooming period to do a Reimu Hakurei Cosplay set. This photo series was shot in a daytime outdoor environment filled with blossoming flowers, where the pink-and-white petal backdrop visually pairs perfectly with Reimu's iconic red-and-white color scheme.
To recreate the character's agility and slice-of-life side, I specifically adjusted my makeup and hairstyle before setting off. I kept the classic straight black hair with flat bangs and used a relatively secure braided style for the twintails to prevent the strands from being blown messy by the wind and disrupting the overall look. For the costume, I selected a Japanese-style fabric with exquisite jacquard patterns. The large red bow on the chest, along with the white lace patchwork on the cuffs and skirt hem, were all details I personally picked out. On my feet, I paired black Mary Janes with white ruffled ankle socks, attempting to inject a touch of Western-style cuteness while maintaining the original settings from Touhou Project.
The cherry trees at this shooting location are incredibly dense with thick trunks, and the ground retains raw rocks and wooden boardwalks, offering numerous composition possibilities for Outdoor photography. During the shoot, a telephoto lens was used to compress the background cherry blossoms and enhance the visual layers. To capture the dynamic feel of the swaying sleeves—such as the moments on the wooden bridge facing the wind or turning around to wave the gohei—we intentionally adjusted the shutter speed to snapshot the natural curves generated by the skirt hem and sleeves. Sometimes, if the prop angle in hand was slightly off, the image would lose its charm, requiring repeated positioning, which made the whole process highly engaging. Beyond the dynamic snapshots, we also tried shots of sitting quietly on the rocks, choosing a lower cherry blossom branch as a foreground obstruction to create an immersive atmosphere where the character feels surrounded by a sea of flowers using a shallow depth of field.
Because the red fabric of the costume used a traditional Japanese cotton-linen blend, it isn't a reflective bright color. Thus, it beautifully preserved color gradients even under intense daytime sunlight without causing pale overexposure, which greatly contributed to the vintage film-like atmosphere of the final photos. Since the shooting location was a scenic area, we put some effort into dodging tourists and finding clean angles. Fortunately, the photographer was highly patient, guiding me on how to naturally drape my cuffs on the tree branches or utilize spinning movements to drive the fabric folds during this Anime cosplay session.
Although the character Reimu Hakurei usually looks somewhat casual and lazy, she is incredibly reliable when handling incidents and her daily yokai exterminations. I hoped to bring this energetic yet grounded state into the frame. The color tone of this photo set slightly raised the brightness to create a translucent and subtly warm atmosphere in spring.
During the annual cherry blossom season, being able to take the opportunity to portray a beloved character is a highly memorable experience. Putting on and taking off the outfit took most of the day, but the final photos look exceptionally refreshing. I feel it successfully recreated that sense of a springtime daily life belonging to Gensokyo. Being able to ride this spring breeze and enjoy such a relaxed shooting experience truly makes one feel at ease.
