This time, I chose to shoot Yabuki Shuro from Blue Archive. As a player who frequently cosplays various anime characters, I've always had a strong fondness for this costume steeped in traditional Japanese elements. To achieve faithful restoration, meticulous preparations were made from costume tailoring to accessory coordination.
Let's start with the costume design. The upper body features a blue-gray sleeveless cross-collar top with a black deep-V inner lining, accented on both sides by black circular frog buttons with two hanging red tassels, neutralizing the aloofness of the overall cool-toned palette. The dark red brocade obi sash around the waist serves as the visual centerpiece, adorned with a small square metal buckle and tied with a slender red cord; this not only cinches the waistline but also makes the color transition much more natural. The lower body consists of a short pleated skirt with high slits revealing black inner undershorts—a design that creates fantastic dynamic motion when walking and posing.
In terms of props and accessories, the long katana is an essential centerpiece; holding the black sheath in hand gives a satisfying weightiness, which, paired with the black geta clogs and red thong straps, echoes the palette of the waist sash nicely. Wrapping arms and legs in white bandage style is a prominent visual hallmark of the character. The bandages should not be wrapped too neatly—irregular folds and cotton texture must be deliberately left to convey a rugged post-combat feel. Furthermore, the white square adhesive bandages on the left cheek, upper left arm, and left thigh serve as key character easter eggs; carefully placing these details makes the battle-worn aesthetic feel much more authentic.
For hair and makeup, the light purple hair and red eyes styling looks very crisp. The long straight wig with blunt bangs really tested hair smoothing and maintenance; when top lighting beamed down during the shoot, the hair surface took on a pearlescent sheen. For makeup, red contact lenses faithfully recreated her eye color, paired with deep red lip color and a translucent base makeup to infuse feminine softness and playfulness into the rugged combat style—a visual contrast that is thoroughly delightful.
When shaping poses and expressions, I aimed to capture the character's playful, slightly teasing, and unconstrained attitude. For example, sitting on the rug with a finger gently tapping my cheek, or placing a finger to my lips in a "shh" gesture brought out a lively nimbleness. When standing, holding the katana with feet slightly apart and tilting my head subtly conveyed a breezy ninja demeanor. During the shoot, consciously elongating the leg lines made the overall silhouette appear much sleeker on camera.
For this shoot, instead of overly complicated sets, we used a clean dark gray background paired with a white plush rug. This minimalist environment maximized focus by avoiding cluttered elements, allowing viewers to appreciate the subject and intricate costume details directly. The candid snapshots taken later at the anime convention venue were more documentary-like; background crowds and ceiling matrix lighting created a live convention ambiance, providing an interesting contrast with the refined studio shoot quality and demonstrating anime cosplay across diverse lighting and settings.
Cosplaying a character like Yabuki Shuro required intense focus throughout the entire journey—not just to mirror her appearance closely, but to capture the essence of the character in demeanor and movement. Looking back at these captured moments after wrapping up, I found that this light Japanese-style ninja outfit possesses immense expressive power both indoors and outdoors. Maintaining a relaxed and natural state before the camera often yields shots far more vivid and true to lore than rigid posing. I hope this photo set conveys the unique charm of this little ninja in the Blue Archive universe as I envision her.
