[Cifera Cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail, A Grey-and-White Kitty at the Anime Convention

Choosing to shoot these convention photos for Cifera from Honkai: Star Rail at an anime convention, I knew from the moment the plan was set that it would be a double test of stamina and patience.

When I got this cosplay costume, my first impression was that there were just so many details. The upper body black leather cropped top features a special patent lacquer finish, which visually highlights the body silhouette nicely, but in the already somewhat sweltering exhibition hall in May, breathability was frankly awful. To keep the silhouette crisp, I basically endured it the entire day. Fabrics of this material easily develop wrinkles—especially with high activity levels—so I had to consciously stretch and smooth out the lines of the garment before every pose.

The gear that required the most effort this time was definitely the pair of bright gold metallic knee-high boots. They provided immense visual tension, but the high-heel design paired with hard molded materials made movement extremely difficult. Walking through the venue required consciously lowering my center of gravity with every step to avoid tripping. Therefore, when choosing poses to shoot, I specifically grabbed a black folding chair on-site as an auxiliary prop. Those seemingly composed seated or cross-legged poses in the photos actually required considerable effort behind the scenes to maintain body balance, while constantly controlling the boots' reflective angle so messy ambient glare wouldn't ruin the metallic luster.

That big fluffy tail was quite eye-catching upon entry. To recreate the character's spirit, I embedded an internal frame skeleton in advance inside the tail, allowing it to drop naturally with an upward curve when posing in single-leg stands, side sits, or kneeling positions, rather than dragging limply on the ground. Controlling such physical details greatly enhances the dynamic feel and sense of life in the photos.

For facial makeup and hair, I specially paired a silver-white short wig with very delicate hair strands, which matched the iconic Animal ears hood to fit the character's temperament seamlessly. To coordinate with the black-gold-blue costume palette, I chose a clean yet subtle sharp eye makeup to highlight a piercing gaze. During the convention shoot, lighting was far more complex than expected, with overhead spotlights easily casting harsh highlights on the shoulder armor and chest pendants. The photographer patiently adjusted flash positioning and exposure settings so the metallic elements appeared both radiant and dimensional with substantial texture, while using a wide aperture to blur out surrounding noisy booths and passersby, making the character stand out clean and focused.

After trying out the different poses shown in these photos, I personally felt the most challenging one was standing on one leg. Surrounded by quite a crowd at the time, fully immersing myself into the character's state in a noisy environment while maintaining a pose that looks effortless yet requires extreme stability was a challenge for both mental composure and body control. Fortunately, the photographer's fast-paced snapping captured that moment of dynamic agility and stability.

After finishing this convention shoot, returning home to strip off the armor and props was another major project—removing the wig and fake ears required great care, and cleaning and maintaining these custom props took a lot of time, especially wiping finger marks and stains off the metal boots with a dedicated cleaning cloth. Despite immense physical exhaustion and aching legs, looking at the restored results on screen, the moment when meticulous prep and hard work blossom into the final result brings tangible joy and fulfillment. This is also the most charming aspect of Anime cosplay—it's not just visually imitating someone, but a comprehensive challenge integrating costume craft, makeup discipline, and physical expression.
