This photoshoot set for You and Me and Her: A Love Story is finally complete! This time, my partner and I teamed up to portray Sone Miyuki and Aoi Mukou. To faithfully recreate both characters, we invested tremendous effort into the wardrobe, hair, and makeup.
Starting with makeup: because Miyuki and Aoi have distinctive eye characteristics, I selected red and brownish-red contact lenses to differentiate the roles. For eye makeup, Miyuki's outer corners were blended with deeper reddish-brown hues to emphasize cool aloofness with a subtle yandere edge; Aoi's eye makeup leaned into soft, sweet pinkish-orange tones. Styling the wigs was the most time-consuming task: Miyuki's purple-black long straight locks required an impeccably sleek texture with completely neat blunt bangs paired with a black headband, while Aoi's pink-orange gradient curly wig featured looped ahoge strands that had to curl naturally without looking frizzy.
For costumes, both characters wore matching sailor-collared shirts with black striping against white fabric, tied at the neck with black bowknots. Layered over top were soft pastel yellow knit cardigans. The bottoms were white pleated skirts trimmed with twin black border lines, paired with black mid-calf socks and black loafers. Though collegiate and everyday in appearance, this outfit is packed with details—such as cardigan button placement and skirt pleat alignment—that required constant smoothing during the shoot.
The shoot was split into studio and outdoor sessions. Photo 1 features a vintage indoor couch scene: I (as Aoi) knelt on the floor holding Miyuki's hands while looking up at her. This pose heavily tested lower-back strength, and conveying Aoi's deep reliance on Miyuki demanded laser-focused eye contact. Miyuki sat on the couch with her head tilted slightly downward; the photographer utilized chiaroscuro lighting to accentuate the subtle dynamic of hierarchy and emotional tension between them. The pairing of Black stockings and leather loafers added an authentic anime mood from this angle.
For the outdoor portion, we chose a small terrace framed with iron fences and wooden benches (Photos 2 and 3). Capturing duo interactions under natural light proved quite challenging—especially when sitting side-by-side on the bench, where height differences and posture needed multiple fine-tunings. In Photo 2, crossing my legs highlighted the visual line of the sailor suit and Black stockings, while Miyuki sat quietly beside me. In Photo 3's standing pose, I rested one hand on my hip while Aoi nestled closely behind Miyuki, showcasing their contrast of fire and ice. Finally, indoor close-ups at a cafe (Photos 4 and 5) captured our relaxed slice-of-life state, with red berry tea and green matcha neatly echoing each of our representative character colors.
The entire shoot tested our command of character psychology—from Miyuki's detachment to Aoi's clingy warmth—requiring seamless emotional shifts across diverse settings. Bringing these characters to life alongside my partner was an immensely enjoyable experience.
