Today marks the 20th anniversary of the broadcast of The Familiar of Zero, and to pay tribute to this iconic anime, I put together this Louise cosplay. From makeup trials to the studio shoot, the entire process was flooded with nostalgia for the golden era of Rie Kugimiya's voice acting. As a student of the magic academy, Louise's most defining feature is her signature long pink hair. To achieve that voluminous yet subtly tousled look, I spent substantial time trimming the wig, repeatedly refining the length of the straight bangs and the curl of the side locks. For the makeup, focus was centered on the eyes, layering soft pinkish eyeshadow and pairing it with contact lenses to faithfully recreate her unique reddish-pink irises, striving to let that proud, tsundere yet resolute spirit shine through her gaze.

For the outfit, I chose the classic white dress shirt paired with a red ribbon tie, accented by thin black ribbons draping from the collar to add depth. The outerwear is a long black magical cape lined in crimson, crafted from fabric with a graceful drape and subtle sheen that catches studio lighting beautifully. The bottom half features a black pleated miniskirt paired with over-the-knee Black stockings and glossy black Mary Jane buckle shoes. To achieve the perfect shot, I paid close attention to the smoothness of the Black stockings and the presentation of leg lines. During seated poses, crossing my legs naturally left just the right amount of absolute territory between the skirt hem and stockings, honoring the magic academy uniform design while visually elongating leg proportions to reflect how this petite character commands such an immense presence. For props, I prepared a wood-grained magic wand and a hefty grimoire embossed with vintage golden birds and floral motifs, whose weighty feel matched the overall styling seamlessly.

The shooting setup featured a clean, light grayish-white backdrop, lit by dual softboxes on both sides complemented by a top rim light to eliminate harsh facial shadows and give the pink hair a luminous, airy glow. In guiding my poses, I experimented with multiple emotional states to capture her multifaceted personality. Sitting on a folding chair with wand in hand, I held my back firmly upright with a slightly haughty, evaluating gaze, capturing Louise's aristocratic pride. Standing with hands on hips as the cape billowed backward channeled her commanding flair right before casting a spell. In the other two setups holding the grimoire, I focused on her studious life as an apprentice mage—cradling the tome in one hand and raising the wand with the other while looking directly into the camera lens, infusing static photography with narrative depth.

This shoot was not merely about recreating costumes and props, but about connecting deeply with the character's inner heart. From fabric selection to fine-tuning every gesture, my goal was to stay as faithful as possible to the original work, bringing this fiery-tempered yet golden-hearted mage into reality. The entire session tested both stamina and concentration, but seeing the finished frames captured in-camera made every effort genuinely worthwhile.
