[Cheshire Cosplay] Azur Lane Sunset-to-Night Practical Shoot Tutorial

Today, I'm sharing the behind-the-scenes process of shooting this Azur Lane Cheshire Cosplay transition from dusk to night. Walking and shooting with the coser across Deqiu Creative Park and along the Xuhui Riverside, I also took the opportunity to document how the Sony A7M5 paired with the 24-70mm F2.8 GM II performs in extreme lighting conditions.

We arrived at the creative park around 4 PM, when the sun was still blazing intensely. To achieve that luminous, translucent rim lighting along the hair strands, I positioned the coser facing away from the sun in direct backlighting. Under such harsh backlight, facial features typically end up underexposed in deep shadows; however, hauling around reflector panels inside the park is cumbersome and significantly slows down shooting efficiency. Therefore, I opted to shoot straight into the backlight. The 16 stops of dynamic range on the Sony A7M5 proved invaluable here: highlight gradations in the background and delicate hair rim lights were preserved without clipping or blown-out highlights, while the coser's makeup and costume textures (including her Stockings details) remained intact with natural tone rolloff after slight shadow lift in post. During shooting, I could focus entirely on dialing in the angle of light and the coser's framing without stressing over whether her face was falling into pure black.

After finishing up at the park as twilight settled, we relocated to the Xuhui Riverside for the Night portrait session. To simultaneously retain cloud details in the evening sky and the ambient city lights in the background, I pushed the camera's sensitivity to ISO 4000. The resulting frame remained impressively clean with virtually no distracting noise. Navigating complex nocturnal lighting, I skipped heavy lighting rigs and assistants entirely, bringing along just a single compact LED light wand. Using this light wand to shine through her cat-ear headpieces and throw a crisp rim light along her silhouette was all it took to make the character pop cleanly off the dark nocturnal backdrop. Going with a lightweight kit allowed me to dedicate my energy to light placement and mood, focusing purely on compositional storytelling.

Transitioning from intense afternoon backlighting to low-light nighttime environments, the camera gear handled every hurdle smoothly. Without needing to haul complex lighting setups, a solo photographer with a camera body and a single lens can pull off a complete creative workflow from golden hour to late night, concentrating wholly on the interplay of light, shadow, and visual atmosphere.
