Standing in the center of the convention photo studio and opening that large black umbrella with red patterns, it felt as if I had truly fallen into the quiet night of the character's setting. Today, I'm sharing my convention photos of Evernight cosplay from Honkai: Star Rail, shot on-site at an indoor convention.
When preparing this look, the biggest difficulty was actually the layering of the outfit and the harmony of colors. The overall core revolves around black, white, and red: the inner white high-collar shirt features an exquisite black decorative knot at the collar, while the outer layer is a loose black stand-collar coat with ribbons. The contrast in materials gives the clothes a great shine under the lighting. I'd especially like to mention the leg details: sheer white stockings paired with black leather thigh rings, plus white slouch socks and black chunky-heeled high-heeled boots with red soles—a stocking outfit with contrasting visual elements that fits the character's aura perfectly. The pink gradient wig took a lot of effort to style as well, especially the black bow hair accessory on top, which, combined with red contact lenses, makes the expression look even more dynamic.
The lighting at the convention venue was actually quite complex. Dense spotlights on the ceiling created very interesting bokeh effects, and the smooth floor surface reflected beautiful inverted shadows. In this environment, the photographer's use of a wide-angle lens highlighted the sense of depth in the whole scene tremendously. The compositions holding the umbrella were quite deliberate: the red radial patterns on the umbrella canopy not only broke up the monotony of black and white, but also seemed like a tangible expression of the character's power.
I personally favor the photo in a seated pose. Photographer @boogie utilized the wide-angle perspective to elongate my leg lines, while working with the tall indoor space and top lighting to create an atmosphere that is both grand and mysterious. The pose standing on a high stool highlights the dynamic feel of the costume even more, with the hem of the coat falling naturally, giving the entire set of photos a sense of breathing rhythm even in stillness.
This shoot was actually a last-minute decision for convention photos, without deliberately building complex sets, simply utilizing the venue's existing open structure. The open background allowed the character's outfit and props to become the absolute visual center. Posing with a large umbrella really tested my arm strength; balancing the umbrella's weight was necessary to make the canopy look most natural, but the final photos turned out quite satisfying.
Personally, I feel the charm of Cosplay photography lies in using makeup, hair, costumes, and props, supported by a specific environment, to recreate an image from a 2D setting. Being able to wear this outfit and freeze this moment in real light and shadow is deeply rewarding in itself. We wove through different exhibition halls searching for suitable angles to capture those moments where light and shadow intersected. Though busy, it was pure happiness.
