[Robin Cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail — Creating an Ethereal Dreamscape

I've actually been preparing for this custom design Robin cosplay for quite a long time. Instead of sticking strictly to the official original art, I decided to incorporate some personal design elements that I really love—such as the copper-gold halo overhead, along with Lolita-style lace and pearl decorations on the dress. Since Robin from Honkai: Star Rail naturally possesses a sacred and ethereal aura, I wanted to retain that quality while bringing the overall visual closer to the delicate feel of a real porcelain doll.

For the costume design, I selected a generous amount of ice-blue tulle and pure white lace. Because the outfit needed to look light and airy, material selection was crucial. For the feathers, I used very fluffy synthetic feathers attached to the shoulders and lower back, so that even a slight breeze or movement would cause them to tremble gently. Combined with the white pom-poms on both sides of the head, it created a wonderful fluffy, breathing texture. The skirt consists of five layered fabrics—the outermost layer is a semi-transparent white tulle with glitter, while the inner layer is a blue-and-white plaid satin. Due to the skirt's volume, moving around and spinning in the studio required extra balance to avoid stepping on the hem.

As for the makeup, I kept both the character's cold elegance and gentle nature in mind. The base makeup emphasized a clean, translucent finish, deliberately avoiding heavy contouring to highlight my natural skin texture. The eye makeup incorporated light blue eyeshadow to echo the hair and outfit, paired with natural blue-gray contact lenses to make the eyes look clearer. Subtle glitter was added to the lower eyelids, alongside heart-shaped stickers on the cheeks for a touch of fairy-like charm and playfulness. The wig features an ice-blue gradient with soft, fluffy curls to give the crown a fuller volume, with the hair texture carefully adjusted to avoid looking heavy.

The shoot took place in a relatively dim indoor studio featuring a dark industrial or reflective background. This dark backdrop contrasted perfectly with the light-colored costume, accentuating the figure's silhouette once the contrast was boosted. For lighting, high-power LED continuous lights were used; the key light shone down from the front-upper angle to mimic soft natural skylight, keeping facial shadows minimal and giving the skin a fair, translucent look. Rim lights in cooler tones were set up behind me to illuminate the edges of the white feathers, defining the contours of my posture.

To enhance the dreamy atmosphere, we brought a bubble machine to the set. The size and direction of the bubbles relied on controlling the airflow. For instance, in the low-angle shot like the third picture, the bubble machine blew from below so bubbles floated up around me, forming a natural blurred frame. Capturing the ideal bubble arrangement required constantly adjusting my position and shutter timing, taking dozens of shots just to select one where the bubbles were evenly distributed and the light refracted through them to create rainbow flares.

The physical poses required for the first and second images were completely different. The first picture called for a formal, dignified static beauty where the collarbone and necklace details were clearly displayed, with my eyes looking directly into the lens to convey a sense of calm strength. The second picture required me to let down my guard entirely, closing my eyes to feel the surroundings as my hand reached up along the path in front of my chest, as if touching a point of light in the void. During the second shot, keeping my arm suspended at that angle caused muscle fatigue quite quickly, but thankfully the final result captured the right facial expression and hand extension.

For post-processing, I chose not to alter the original lighting structure drastically, focusing instead on color harmony and texture. I toned down clutter in the background lighting and aligned the overall color palette toward blue and white tones, slightly lifting the shadow details to reveal the outfit's texture and lace patterns. To prevent the image from looking washed out, I preserved the natural glow on the highlights of the feathers and lace.

Although all photos were taken in the same set, varying the poses, bubble density, and camera angles resulted in three distinct moods—from close-ups focusing on outfit details and makeup in the first image, to wide-angle shots capturing atmospheric moods and body dynamics in the later ones. As a custom cosplay project, I believe the most important aspect is adding one's own understanding and aesthetic preference while showcasing the character's key traits. Wearing such a heavy, elaborate costume while maintaining an elegant posture took considerable effort, but seeing the quiet, dreamlike outcome makes all the preparation and hard work entirely worthwhile.
