Let's dive straight into this Zenless Zone Zero Ellen Joe cosplay shoot.
When I received this shooting plan, the first thing I confirmed was the character's core visual identity. Ellen Joe's design is inherently a distinct mix-and-match aesthetic—pairing a JK uniform with a massive shark tail creates a stark, highly recognizable contrast. Thus, the focus of preparation was twofold: high costume accuracy and that remarkably eye-catching giant animal tail prop.
The white shirt and navy blue pleated skirt form the base, trimmed with white piping that instantly delivers that authentic school uniform vibe. Styling the black hair and hair clips also took considerable care; with bangs covering the forehead, the wig needed trimming just enough to reveal the eyes while preserving a natural, effortless languor. The hair clip is a minimalist silver geometric piece—understated yet prominent, perfectly matching the overall palette. For makeup, I opted for a lighter, clean look, focusing on eye contours and bold red lips to emphasize clear, bright eyes. Paired with the lollipop prop in hand, this better showcased her cool yet nonchalant personality.
The key prop on the shooting day was this giant whale-shark animal tail prop. The tail is massive and built with internal structural support, giving it a natural drape and curve whether sitting or standing. Finished in black and gray with a red fishbone emblem on the side, it pops visually and anchors the composition's visual weight in any pose. Although wearing the tail enlarged my overall silhouette, it hardly hindered movement and instead added significant commanding presence to the aura.
For the location, we selected a clean, pure white seamless backdrop. I love this minimalist aesthetic because a solid background highlights costume details and character props without distracting clutter. During shooting, I adopted a relaxed sitting posture—crossing my legs on a transparent acrylic chair, holding my phone while keeping a lollipop in my mouth. This action design mirrors the everyday state of players logging into the game while fitting her effortless, composed temperament.
The footwear was another major highlight: glossy black patent-leather chunky Mary Janes paired with black stockings in a classic JK in black tights aesthetic, which dramatically elongates leg lines. Throughout the shoot, I paid special attention to leg positioning so the combination of platform heels and black tights looked even more slender and sculpted on camera, satisfying fan expectations for that sleek yet alluring charm. Because Ellen Joe's JK uniform is nicely tailored, combining it with black tights and chunky heels creates a very sharp, clean silhouette in the final photos.
The photographer, Maomao, provided relaxed guidance during candid snapshots, avoiding rigid poses and letting me genuinely immerse myself in browsing my phone. This casual, natural vibe better aligned with the impression Ellen Joe gives throughout in-game story quests and missions. Checking raw unedited previews during breaks, the color contrast between the giant tail, shoes, and pure white backdrop was striking, maxing out the cinematic atmosphere.
In post-processing, we mainly unified skin tones and clothing hues, making the white shirt look crisp and the navy pleated skirt more textured, while preserving the specular highlights on the black tights and patent shoes. The overall photo style leans bright, translucent, and clean. This JK-style Zenless Zone Zero Ellen Joe cosplay, complete with the massive animal tail prop, seems everyday yet remains truly extraordinary—the entire casual cosplay experience was incredibly fun, with seamless chemistry between the photographer and me.
