The location for this Eyjafjalla the Hvít Aska photoshoot was chosen in a sea of Hydrangea inside a greenhouse, primarily because the character naturally carries an earthy and healing aura that resonates deeply with the Hydrangea ambiance. To capture satisfying shots, we entered early in the morning while the light was still relatively soft. Today, I'd like to share the shooting details and styling insights behind this cosplay work.
There are quite a few noteworthy aspects in the costume itself. The purple sleeveless shirt paired with a white capelet provides a richly layered visual appeal. To align with the character's design, I deliberately tightened the black and blue waist straps, which not only sculpted the figure but also lent a crisper, more agile silhouette to the overall styling. The pleated miniskirt on the lower half and the dark Stockings adorned with red stripe motifs serve as the focal point of this look; the pattern across the Stockings effectively breaks the monotony of solid colors. The red and blue strap details on the shoes were also meticulously adjusted, echoing naturally with the red thigh straps in a cohesive palette.
As for props, the long staff adorned with a branch-like silhouette and red-and-blue leaf accents required the most effort. To ease the physical burden during shooting, we tested various materials and ultimately settled on a lightweight build that preserved high-end tactile quality. When holding up or wielding the staff amidst the blossoms, slightly angling the wrists allowed us to catch the natural light filtering through the greenhouse ceiling, rendering a delightful sheen of blended metallic and wooden textures before the camera.
During shooting, the greatest hurdle was scouting the optimal framing angles among the lush blooms. The Hydrangea clusters reached between knee and waist height; standing shots risked cluttering the background. Consequently, we explored numerous seated and squatting postures. Sitting on a white chair, I intentionally angled the staff across my lap with my upper body tilted slightly forward—this allowed the skirt hem to drape naturally while granting ample visual room to accentuate the leg lines and Stockings, enriching the focal elements of the frame. While half-squatting among the flowers, I focused on keeping my center of gravity steady to avoid facial stiffness stemming from precarious balance.
Wig maintenance and makeup endurance posed serious tests in a greenhouse environment as well. The warmer interior made sweating likely, so setting the base makeup firmly was paramount. The light-brown long curly wig carried a bit of weight, yet combined with the white horn crest and red-and-blue feather headpieces on top, crisp dimensionality emerged immediately. For makeup, emphasis was placed on eye blending, using reddish eyeshadow tones to harmonize with the costume's subtle details and impart lively radiance on camera.
While blurring the background with a wide aperture, the photographer thoughtfully preserved some foreground Hydrangea petals, imparting superior depth to the composition. Throughout this Greenhouse photography journey, though physically tiring, witnessing the purple wardrobe blend seamlessly with the vibrant Hydrangeas made every bit of dedication deeply rewarding.
