Putting on this classic black and white Japanese-style maid outfit and securing my twin tails, I wanted to take advantage of the afternoon natural light this time to shoot a highly accurate Kasugano Sora set.
For the clothing, an apron decorated with ruffles was chosen, and the lace details at the neckline and cuffs are relatively faithful to the original. The wig is smooth, light-colored long straight hair, and it took quite a while to adjust the curvature of the sideburns on both sides to look natural. In terms of makeup, I intentionally toned down the eyeshadow, focusing instead on the blending of the eyeliner and making each eyelash distinct. This presents a fair-skinned countenance that carries a hint of a cool, detached look while still revealing a touch of softness.
A Japanese-style wooden veranda was selected as the shooting venue. A dark grey-green rabbit plush toy was placed nearby, which is a highlight from the prop team. On the small wooden table to the right, a glass bowl containing goldfish and a plate of fruit were placed. Combined with the light and shadow filtering through the wooden door grilles, it creates a leisurely sense of afternoon life. To capture the texture of natural light illumination, I specifically looked for this spot where doors and windows block the light, creating a boundary between light and dark.
During the shoot, I communicated many details with the photographer. For example, in photo 3, my action of holding the fishbowl was actually me studying the goldfish inside. The photographer captured this moment of turning sideways and lowering my head, which feels much more vivid than simply sitting upright. Then, the pose in photos 1 and 2, with my hands crossed on my lap, was meant to express that introverted, quiet atmosphere that carries a sense of distance. The scent of the wooden house blended with the flow of the outdoor wind, and I instantly immersed myself into the state.
Actually, when editing this set of photos, I paid close attention to the texture of the skin tone, avoiding over-smoothing and retaining some skin textures and layers of light and shadow. Because Sora's character personality is quite complex—possessing both a sisterly dependency and her own independence—I tried my best to keep my expression blank and my gaze clear in front of the lens. Walking around in these black leather shoes and white thigh-highs was actually a bit inconvenient, but for character accuracy, these details could absolutely not be compromised.
Natural light is truly a photographer's best friend. Choosing this Japanese-style garden filled with woodwork and gravel, the overall tone and atmosphere of the photos became completely different. Without any intentional lighting, just relying on the projection formed by sunlight filtering through the shoji doors, paired with a bowl of goldfish and some fruits, it becomes a very complete afternoon tea scene. I hope everyone can feel my dedication to the hair, makeup, props, light, and shadow this time through this cosplay photography project.
