For this shoot, I chose the classic look of the beloved Virtual Singer for my Hatsune Miku cosplay creation. The overall color palette adhered to the familiar scheme of cyan, black, and silver. To make the silhouette pop against a pure white backdrop, we put considerable thought into selecting garment fabrics. The silver-white top of this Patent leather outfit utilized high-gloss patent leather with strong reflective properties, exuding a crisp, industrial tech aesthetic under studio lights. Paired with detachable black arm sleeves and over-the-knee boots, the overall visual carried both a futuristic aura and a sleek, cybernetic edge.
Let's talk details of the outfit first. This silver sleeveless top was tailored closely to the body, with finely stitched cyan-green zig-zag piping tracing the edges. However, patent leather is relatively rigid, somewhat restricting movement around the shoulders and waist once worn. To stay faithful to the character design, the sleeves were detachable, extending from the upper arms down to the wrists; black patent leather catches even the slightest specks of dust under lights, requiring repeated wiping before shooting. The shorts and belt on the lower half similarly adopted a cyan-and-black contrasting design, with triangular geometric motifs on the belt serving as a brilliant accent. The high-heeled boots naturally shifted my center of gravity forward, which proved immensely helpful when striking dynamic, high-tension poses.
Prepping the wig took up more than half of the preparation time. While vivid cyan Twintails are stunning, they can easily appear frizzy. To make the Twintails look full and structurally supported, I added hair padding inside and applied plenty of setting spray. The blunt bangs were softly curved with a curling iron to prevent them from looking stiff. As for makeup, to match the overall cool palette, I wore pale cyan-blue contact lenses, deepened the eye sockets slightly with earth-toned eyeshadow, and winged the eyeliner slightly upward to elongate the eyes. Blush was kept very subtle, while the lips were finished with a dewy lip glaze to maintain a clean, translucent face while adding a futuristic touch.
The shooting was conducted as a pure white-backdrop Studio photography session. The greatest benefit of a pure white background is the absence of distracting clutter, maximizing the true color reproduction of the character. The photographer used a low-angle perspective, which elongated leg lines and gave the shots greater visual impact. Posing required extending one leg forward while leaning my upper body back. Despite the tight clothing, fine-tuning the angles alongside hand gestures adjusting the headset microphone yielded the desired result. Controlling my gaze was equally crucial; performing without physical stage props meant imagining a camera or a live crowd right in front of me, keeping my focus sharp and penetrating.
Without complex environmental interactions, the focus of this series fell entirely on body lines and garment textures. When bending my arms, the black patent leather sleeves created gorgeous creasing and specular highlights. The cyan trim on the boots stood out vividly against the stark white backdrop. Throughout the shoot, I strove to keep movements expansive to showcase the unique sci-fi vibe of this Patent leather outfit. Even though patent leather isn't breathable and left me drenched in sweat, seeing the clash between silver and cyan in the final images made it entirely worthwhile. This aesthetic, brimming with futuristic and 2D elements, has always been a style I adore—it carries a singular charm that transcends dimensions.
