These Tactical style Hatsune Miku convention photos shot during New Year's Day at the Changsha Mengka ACG Expo have finally been retouched—the entire journey from early prep to the bustling show floor was packed with challenges.

The idea for this tactical, dark-aesthetic concept had been brewing in my mind for a long time. To intentionally break away from the conventional sweet and bubbly Vocaloid image, I dedicated considerable effort to the wardrobe and props. Pairing a form-fitting black long-sleeve base layer with a modular tactical vest meant repeatedly tuning every chest buckle and harness strap before setting out, ensuring everything sat flush against the body without adding unwanted bulk before the camera. Arm bracers, tactical knee pads, over-the-knee Black stockings, and chunky combat boots with metallic eyelets and lugged treads added up to considerable physical weight.

The convention floor was predictably noisy and chaotic. To hunt down a backdrop that approximated an industrial or moody dark aesthetic, the photographer and I circled the perimeter several times, ultimately claiming an understated corner featuring a metal folding ladder. The ambient lighting was harsh with unforgiving overhead fixtures, but my photographer, WIFI, brought dedicated off-camera lighting gear, using a wide aperture to melt background hot spots into creamy bokeh discs, which sharply carved out the subject's silhouette and metallic highlights across the prop rifle.

In terms of loadout, the AR-pattern prop rifle served as the visual centerpiece. Fitted with an optical scope and an extended magazine, it carried notable heft. In standing aim postures, I had to support the handguard with one hand while gripping the receiver with the other, sinking my shoulders and locking my core tight. Holding this stance across multiple takes inevitably led to arm fatigue, but achieving authentic weapons handling demanded continuous posture checks. To elevate the covert operative persona, I wore a textured black face mask and an over-ear communications headset throughout, exposing only the eyes. This placed immense pressure on the eye makeup: I deepened the pinkish-red shading around the outer corners, pairing it with bright blue contact lenses that contrasted vividly against the vibrant teal twin-tails, creating an arresting focal point against the dark palette.

Later incorporating the metal folding ladder as a prop aimed to expand framing possibilities. Seated upon the rungs, I crossed my legs, a posture that not only showcased the texture of the Black stockings and heavy boots, but also visually elongated leg lines, adding tension to the tactical silhouette. Another frame leaning forward with the muzzle pointed directly down the lens created intense perspective distortion, requiring the photographer to lie flat on the floor to frame the shot while I held an unyielding, piercing gaze. Whenever an air current swept past, the long teal pigtails lifted, carving natural kinetic lines across the frame with individual hair strands rendered cleanly.

Although navigating the convention in this heavy tactical gear was cumbersome—walking all day in platform boots took a toll on my feet and breathing through the mask grew warm—seeing the razor-sharp contours, rich textile contrasts, and fierce eye contact across the final proofs washed all the fatigue away. Fully departing from conventional soft sweetness, this set stands as a pure artistic breakthrough.
