For this Daji cosplay shoot, from advance preparations to the final output, I have organized some specific details regarding Anime-style makeup and styling and shooting. The outfit is a modified kimono style predominantly in an orange-red and gold color scheme; the neckline is made off-the-shoulder, edged with stiff golden trim, and layered over a white tube top inside. The waist is the most visually prominent part of this outfit: in front of a wide, glossy gold obi sash hangs a giant floral ball composed of multiple red flowers, accented with red braided knots and tassels. To showcase better proportions in front of the lens, I chose to pair it with shorts in a matching color scheme and sat on a black folding high stool.
For the wig, I selected short, pale blonde hair trimmed into layers that frame the face, with a pair of white plush beast ears fixed to both sides of the top of the head. To make the transition of the beast ears more natural, I pinned red flowers and golden hairpins at the base of the ears. For makeup, eye makeup was the focal point; I used red contact lenses paired with broadly blended red eyeshadow, extending the outer corners of the eyes to bring out a touch of foxy bewitching charm. The base makeup emphasized fair skin and a matte finish, with dark red chosen for the lips. In particular, from the right clavicle to the shoulder, I applied a painted red flower appliqué, which was very eye-catching in the photos.
The prop used for shooting was a long black pipe with gold accents and a tassel at the handle. During the shoot, I found that when holding the long pipe, slightly turning the wrist outward and flexing the elbow made the lines look more relaxed, avoiding stiff poses. In the first half-body photo, the focus was on facial expression and the collarbone, conveying a sense of mystery by slightly lowering the head while looking upward. In the second full-body photo, to showcase the overall coordination of the off-the-shoulder top and shorts, I adjusted my seating posture—crossing my legs with one foot slightly extended forward, utilizing black high-heeled sandals and red bows to visually elongate my legs.
Since the shooting location was backstage at the anime convention where the background environment was quite messy, we opted for Convention photography with a dark background, using a wide aperture to blur out the cluttered equipment and passersby. To match this dark backdrop, rim lighting was added to the lighting setup to make the red outfit and reflective gold materials pop three-dimensionally in the frame. Overall, this set of photos achieved the desired effect in terms of color contrast and body contours, without overly forced poses, finding angles within natural seated postures instead. This also reflects some of my practical experience in getting quick shots during convention breaks.
