[Nero Cosplay] Happy 2026 New Year: Fate/Grand Order Red and White Maid Outfit Convention Photography Post

Sorting through the camera files, I came across this finalized test shot of Nero—this red and white palette truly fits the festive mood of the 2026 New Year. This post is mainly to share the makeup and styling details of this look, as well as the convention photography experience.

For hair styling, managing Nero's blonde bob wig with straight blunt bangs was quite time-consuming. Since it's a short bob cut that still needs sufficiently long hair draping down both cheeks, it required repeatedly smoothing it out with a comb and locking the roots with hairspray. To match the character's temperament, red ribbons were tied on both sides; their length and drape angle were adjusted multiple times before securing them in their current placement. The white ruffled headpiece on top added an extra touch of cuteness.

For makeup, because the character's eyeshadow is classically red-toned, I used a popular reddish-brown as a base and subtly smudged bright red under the eyes. I chose translucent green contact lenses to make my eyes pop brightly under the light. The foundation had a matte finish, set with a generous layer of translucent powder to prevent oiliness in the crowded convention hall. The eyebrows were drawn in a soft light brown to better harmonize with the golden wig. To capture the confident yet slightly playful expression in this photo, I carefully balanced on the fine line between smiling and staying serious—taking numerous shots of slightly upturned lips before picking the most satisfying one.

The costume fabric has fantastic quality. The red jacket is made of thick satin with white inner linings at the collar and cuffs, while the chest area and apron feature dense pleated ruffles that look delightfully voluminous, visually accentuating body curves in this frontal shot. The gold shoulder tassels and gold waist ornaments showed the richest texture in dim light, shining with a sharp metallic sheen. Since the skirt hem is quite long, I had to hold it up slightly when walking. In my hands, I held a massive gold circular disc prop; with its intricate design, it felt quite heavy in person and took noticeable arm strength to hold level. My arms ached for a long time after the shoot, but seeing how well it paired with the outfit made it completely worthwhile.

The shooting location was the ground-floor lobby of a large convention center, backed by a clear glass curtain wall and grey floor tiles. The hall was packed with people in the background, but fortunately, the photographer was very experienced and used a wide-aperture lens to melt the background into soft bokeh, keeping only the texture of the distant glass. We primarily relied on natural light, which diffused evenly through the glass curtain wall without casting harsh shadows. Under this light, skin tones looked exceptionally translucent and brought out the rich layering of the red costume. Passersby stopped to watch, but it didn't disrupt my focus; if anything, the lively crowd elevated the on-site atmosphere, resulting in more natural expressions.

Welcoming the 2026 New Year in such a vibrant red and white Maid outfit felt delightfully ceremonial. Preparing and shooting every cosplay involves hard work—from coordinating with the photographer and makeup artist to post-processing, a lot of thought went into it. As a New Year keepsake, the overall result is deeply satisfying. Having posed at many conventions, I've become much more comfortable before the lens, which led to a high yield of great shots capturing details from various angles.

The convention day was packed: queuing early for entry and makeup, then rushing to the designated shoot location, even crouching in a corner halfway through to wolf down a piece of bread for energy. Cosplaying is tiring for everyone, but seeing the skirt pleats stay crisp, the tassels intact, and the wig holding its sharp curves in the final edits makes all the effort worthwhile. We deliberately skipped heavy visual effects in post to preserve the authentic convention atmosphere, keeping it grounded and natural. In the new year, I hope to portray more beloved characters, capture more textured photos, and record the inner feelings behind every cosplay journey.
