From initial prep to final image delivery, this Empress styling took under two weeks, primarily rushed to seize the Convention photo opportunity at REDLAND. The Amazon Lily aesthetic is intensely vibrant: a red cropped top paired with pink petal cuffs and a white bandeau, cinched by a belt with a circular gold buckle. The overall chromatic contrast was remarkably high, catching eyes immediately before the booth. The wig was long, sleek black hair paired with vivid blue contacts, while the serpentine earring on my left ear was custom-crafted. The straw hat in my hand and the one resting on the display table came in different sizes; while the one bearing black crisscross patterns aligned closer to certain specific designs, I opted for this classic version to complement the blue ocean backdrop.
The garment silhouette was revised twice, primarily to maintain a crisp, structured drape before the lens. The fabric was chosen for its structural support without being overly heavy, ensuring it wouldn't look cheap under convention hall lighting. The pink petal trim on the red outer garment required specialized shaping, as it could easily collapse otherwise. The pairing of the bandeau and belt had to remain anchored through dynamic movements, so anti-slip silicone strips were sewn into the inner lining.
Lighting during the shoot had a high dynamic range. Set against blue background boards and surrounded by crowds, I favored side angles and low-angle upward shots to cut out the throng. In posing, lifting the straw hat with my right hand while steadying the one on my head with my left accentuated the collarbones and waistline, projecting that iconic Empress aura—imperious and disdainful of all, yet harboring inner tenderness. Placing a smartphone, cards, and a spare straw hat onto the stage was an intentional design choice, cultivating an organic, lived-in scene.
Having collaborated with One Piece: The Path of the Hero several times, my appreciation of this character has only deepened. Saying 'always maintain a burning passion just like Luffy' is never an empty cliché; every time I put on this costume, I must immerse myself entirely into the character. From makeup adjustments to garment tailoring, every detail must stand up to scrutiny—especially the metallic buckle and the black sleeve piping, where dark jacquard patterns were added for dimensional depth. The entire convention shoot took around three hours. Mid-way through, the wig tangled slightly, so I re-combed it with hair serum and touched up my eye makeup once, as blue contacts demand pristine cleanliness around the eye contour.
While many photographers prefer wide apertures to blur the backdrop, I believe the strength of a Convention photo lies in the ambiance provided by the live venue. Thus, the aperture was held around f/4, preserving details of the booth and background to give the frame breathing room. Many fellow fans came over for photos and traded thoughts on the Amazon Lily arc. My biggest takeaway after shooting is that the Empress's sensuality isn't merely about showing skin, but about an overwhelming aura. I often ponder the kinetic hallmarks of different characters—the Empress's stance requires a slight backward lean, a gently tucked chin, and confident level gaze. I will continue exploring shoots across different settings to unveil the multifaceted nature of characters. Every cosplay endeavor is a fresh reinterpretation, drawing closer to a 2D figure through garments, props, and expressions—a process thoroughly rewarding in itself. For this shoot, I rehearsed facial control for hours in advance to bring my absolute peak state the instant the shutter snapped. From tailoring nuances to overarching mood, I strived for total authenticity with this Empress portrayal, looking forward to bringing more diverse character journeys ahead.
