The convention photos from Qingdao DC Anime Convention are finally curated! I portrayed Dalian from Brown Dust 2, a black-and-gold Military style design I had long wanted to try. Because it was shot live on the convention floor where ambient lighting is relatively complex, we invested significant thought into textile textures and posing choreography. The long black coat features a sharply cinched waistline, while double-breasted gold buttons and fringed shoulder epaulets cast crisp metallic glints under camera flashes. The curved white inner chest paneling and lace-trimmed cuffs softened the coat's rigid silhouette, elevating its overall refinement. Below, high-gloss white leggings were styled; under the lights, this material mirrors the sheen of White stockings, exceptionally accentuating leg lines. To complement the outfit, I prepared an ash-pink long wavy wig adorned with a blue floral hairpin on the side, paired with matching contact lenses to maintain a controlled palette of black, white, gold, and dusty pink. The prop was an uchigatana katana, with black braided hilt textures and purple sageo cord wraps subtly echoing garment accents.
During the shoot, the photographer leveraged an on-site step stool and the venue's reflective flooring. Sitting on the ladder with crossed legs maximized waistline and leg proportions, holding the long blade toward the lens with a cold, piercing gaze. The kneeling pose holding the katana with both hands shifted the mood toward battlefield tension; this posture demanded considerable core engagement, particularly while balancing on high heels where stabilizing my center of gravity was vital. The convention hall was expansive with a busy background, so we favored low-angle framing and shallow depth of field, stretching my silhouette while melting distracting background clutter into soft blur. White balance was nudged toward a cooler Kelvin temperature, grounding the overall frame in a chilly tone fitting the character's persona.
Many friends asked about mobility in this outfit. Fastening the corseted waistbelt indeed restricted movement range. In high-sheen leggings and stiletto heels, navigating the convention floor demanded extreme caution, as stepping on hems or slipping would have been catastrophic. When posing, I anchored myself against supports—leaning against the stool or kneeling on the floor—to sustain an elegant posture while easing foot strain. Prepping the wig was equally time-consuming; dusty pink easily looks frizzy, so I treated it thoroughly with conditioning serums and styling sprays beforehand to retain buoyant yet crisp layering.
Although temperatures inside Qingdao DC were mild that day, wearing a long-sleeved trench coat and heavy wig still felt stiflingly warm. Yet seeing the lighting results made every bit of discomfort worthwhile. The thrill of 2.5D photography lies in bringing flat character designs to three-dimensional life through attire, lighting, and kinetics. In embodying Dalian, I traversed from relaxed seated elegance to taut combat kneeling, exploring varied facets of her presence. The authenticity of Convention photos stems from real-time environmental spontaneity; lacking controlled studio strobes, embracing venue reflections and architectural elevations yields unexpected textures. Post-processing retained authentic skin grain and garment gloss without excessive digital smoothing, preserving that sharp, graphic edge of character recreation.
