For this Da Qiao shoot, we selected a coastal location primarily to capture the organic, raw texture of crashing tides intermingling with jagged reefs. For hair and makeup, I paired vivid blue contact lenses with warm red-toned eyeshadow to honor the character's temperament. The base foundation was kept as dewy and translucent as possible; harsh outdoor sun can make heavy makeup look unnatural. A classic crimson lip was chosen to harmonize with the coastal atmosphere.
Crafting the prop took the most painstaking effort. The tip of the Staff prop is crowned with fluid, gilded flame carvings; sanding and painting them to achieve a weighted metallic finish required considerable time. The oversized blue orb in the center is cast in semi-translucent resin swirled with pearlescent mica and floating glitter, which refracted mesmerizing caustics when spun beneath natural sunlight. The most challenging aspect was replicating the canonical floating effect of the orb—it was tethered to the staff shaft using ultra-fine monofilament line, demanding continual angle adjustments during takes to avoid showing on camera. Holding it steady over long periods was quite exhausting on the wrists.
Regarding the wardrobe, the scarlet bandeau dress paired with orange-yellow gradient chiffon sleeves offered rich dimensional layering. The heart-shaped blue jewel brooch on the bodice carried noticeable weight, secured with multiple internal snaps and straps to stay firmly anchored. The wig featured softly waved brunette tresses with side plaits, alongside a carefully sculpted ahoge on top. Because the character is canonically barefoot, the gilded anklets and sheer ribbons looked stunning, yet navigating mossy, jagged reefs barefoot required extreme caution. A single slip could send both model and prop tumbling into the sea, so every step was taken with utmost care.
The shoot was far from effortless. Powerful sea breezes meant racing against wind gusts before every shutter release; stray strands frequently whipped across my face, requiring quick resets before re-entering character. While the late-afternoon glow was gentle, water surface reflections remained intense, demanding strict gaze control—gazing toward the distant sea horizon felt much more natural than squinting. For seated framing, to flatter fabric drapes and leg contours, we tested several angles before settling on a side-profile pose with crossed legs and one arm extending outward. This posture showcased the full profile of the staff, infused the composition with dynamic tension, and allowed the body to appear poised and fluid.
Working amidst the rhythmic crash of the waves brought an organic sense of inner serenity. Although the caption mentions 'the tides harboring forgotten, silent names,' my focus during shooting was primarily on orchestrating a striking chromatic collision between the crimson skirt and azure sea. Location shoots are undeniably more demanding than studio work—enduring heavy props, volatile weather, slippery terrain, and insects. Yet the radiant translucency natural light lends to skin and the boundless environmental depth are qualities no indoor studio can replicate. Seeing the staff's artisanal relief, the gossamer gauze layers, and the fine crests of the waves captured with tack-sharp fidelity made scaling those craggy rocks completely worthwhile. I hope this interpretation of Da Qiao delivers a refreshing, immersive experience to everyone.
